Thanks, I have two more questions (and I apologize if this is borderline thread hijacking), could I also intra-family transfer one to a parent within 60 days without registering it first, and does anyone think the DOJ will have a fit if I register 6 or is that still "reasonable" in CA?

Obviously off-roster handguns are the smartest thing to buy, assuming there are ones you want, since it will be harder and more expensive to buy them later if you decide you want them.

That being said, I recently bought a Ruger 10/22 in anticipation of moving to CA, I've wanted one for a while and was able to get a new one from a sporting goods chain for under $200 out the door, I know that same gun would cost at least $50 more OTD in CA plus the 10 day cooling off period and the wasted gas of driving back to pick it up, just made sense to get it now.

Not to nag, but does anyone know if the DOJ has a number of handguns for personal import which it considers reasonable, would 6 raise any red flags?

no limit iirc for personal import if you are moving back into state. they can't exactly put an arbitrary # of how many guns a person can own.

but probably what will happen is that if that same person started to liquidate a large portion of their collection just after moving back in, that might draw some attention.

The Taurus Judge I believe is illegal in California, it's considered a short barreled shotgun by the DOJ, so that's guaranteed jail time.

Ok so there are no horror stories regarding personal imports of 6 or more handguns as long as the importer didn't do anything stupid like be prohibited from owning guns, sell 10 within a day of moving or try and register an illegal gun?

I'm trying to look ahead and figure out what gun I will want in the future but not be able to buy, although I could have a parent PPT it via an FFL that seems like a lot of hassle, and my parents aren't that nice. The Valor or an STI Trojan might fit the bill. I'm not going to bring extras to sell, that just seems like a huge waste of time and is either borderline illegal or illegal.
