I would say Glock, but for the price of a used one your friend is better off looking for a used Springfield XD pistol. You can find them in the low $400 range. Or if you want an OK 9mm to play with, the S&W Sigma works well. Trigger is fine for me, as I don't mind the heavier DA pull. The gun's craftsmanship looks no where as good as the XD or Glock, but at $250-$300 used it's a good starter 9mm to play around with.

I say you sell him one of your Glocks for $400 OTD. That would do it.

For <$400 a used P series Ruger nine or Ruger MK would be fun. The .22 would be way cheaper to feed.

Thanks for all the advice folks... he's not too into the aesthetics of mk III or the buckmark. I know it's not all about looks etc etc, but its part of it.

If he dosn't like the looks of a MK III I would suggest a GSG 1911. $300ish for a .22lr 1911 that actualy works pretty well.

in a center fire, I would say a P95 for a new gun, or if he can find one a TT-33 as the ammo is dirt cheap.

in any case, I agree he rent a few guns and see what style he likes first, a lot of people will chime in and say "get a X(glock,1911,sig,whatever)" but no style of gun works for everyone(for example, I cant shoot a Glock or HK USP at all well, but a 1911 and I'll cut the bullseye out of the target).

I suggest this because if the gun dosn't work for him it will turn him off shooting and it will just become an expensive paperweight.

I would pick a used Glock, XD or Sig. You don't want your first pistol to be a problem.
