    9mm Ammo recommendations

I'm planning on picking up my M&P 9mm tomorrow and taking it to the range. I'm sure ammo recommendations vary depending on their purpose. What ammo would you guys recommend for:

    1. The range

    2. Home defense

I want to try to take care of my gun as best I can and don't mind paying a little extra for a higher quality ammo if it means its more reliable or will shoot cleaner. I would also be interested in hearing from people who own an m&p and find it likes one brand of ammo better than another. Thanks

For the range, go to walmart, they have the cheapest factory 9mm available to you by tomorrow. Just got to call a few stores to find out wich one sells ammo.

How much is whitebox? Reloaded range ammo 9mm is around 75 or 85 per/500 at the shows.

Gun show ammo is generally cheaper than WalMart (not counting admission, parking, hot dogs, etc)- but when ya cant get the show ammo WallyWorld is generally the best prices.

I just use Winchester RA9T for range and for defense. Sometimes, I use Winchester Winclean for practice, but I like to use RA9T for both purposes.

It isn't the Pill....It's the Placement

Any good quality, first tier hollow point ammunition that is reliable in your gun will do. Placement is everything in handgun self defense. It matters not what T-Rex killing rounds you have in the gun if you are intimidated by the blast and recoil. Every manufacture has their man-stopper of the month round and AJD's list is a fine start.
There is no "death ray" ammo for handguns. There are NO guaranteed one shot stoppers on the market, they don't exist.
When choosing your "life safety" ammunition try different brands and bullet weights. They will have different points of impact. Find one(s) that hits where you're aiming and then buy a case of it...if your gun chews it up and fires EVERY time you press the trigger. Some guns are finnicky when it comes to ammo (not Glocks, they chamber empty cases).
Good luck on your quest and do not necessarily buy into manufactures claims or gellatin tests. Actual shootings are a pretty good yardstick, but they too can be flawed by the "human reaction factor".
Personally I carry what ever is free. I do not wrapped around the axle over which is the "best" this week. I know it's where you hit'm that determines your overall effectiveness and success.
When I have to buy my ammo, it's Federal HST, Winchester "T" series or Corbon Pow'r Ball. But that's just me. Your mileage may differ....

                      Thanks for the feedback.

The consensus here seems to be winchester is a good brand and Walmart is a good place to get ammo cheap. I've heard someone recommend speer gold dot before, so ill make sure to check that out too.

Should I be concerned about the grain of the ammo? I understand that it is a reference to the weight of the bullet, but I'm not exactly sure how that impacts its performance.

For the range I go to wal-mart and pick up Federal or Winchester both are pretty good a little dirty but good.

For home defense I use Winchester Ranger T series 124gr +P and I also have Ranger T series in 147gr.

Range I mostly shoot WalMarts Federal and Winchester white box. For SD I have Winchester PDX1 124gr +P, Ranger SXT's 147gr and Federal Hydra Shock 147gr. I've yet to shoot the Ranger SXT's, hopefully soon. Everything I have listed has shot flawlessly out of my XD Service.

For plinking and target shooting I use Sellier and Bellot it's cheaper than WWB or Federal from Walmart clean and consistent, here: http://www.surplusammo.com/products/...00-Rounds.html
