GLOCK 21 SF vs. SIG P220

Calgunners-- I was at my LGS yesterday picking up a part for my AR when I came across a thing of beauty... a G21 SF. As my handle suggests, I shoot a SIG and I've been thinking about a P220 for some time now as I would like a .45 to go along with my P226 9. But man, that G21 SF felt SO GOOD in my hands (I had a G17 before and it didn't feel nearly as good as this G21 SF). The P220 felt great too, like my P226. But, the G21 SF is about 3 bills cheaper than the P220. Can anyone who has actual hands on experience with both guns give me any insight? I have any idea how the P220 will handle/shoot but how does the G21 SF handle/shoot? I read that the G21 SF is considered a 4th Gen Glock and a significant improvement over the G21?

I own both a 21sf and a 220 elite. I have to say, the Sig is a ferrari. Thing feels amazing, and looks good while its doing it. However, the 21 has a more rugged feel, it's reliable, shoots great, has a little more recoil than the Sig and isn't the prettiest thing out there. In essence, it depends on what you are looking to use the pistol for. The sig is more of a range, fun gun, when, the glock is a reliable daily driver... think of the sig as a ferrari and the glock as a camaro... everyone wants a ferrari but you can't drive it into work everyday.

The GLOCK 21 or GLOCK 21SF (Short Frame) are very accurate out of the box.

The Glock 21SF is not a Gen 4 unless it says GEN 4 on the left side of the slide. (also the frame texture will be completely different)

I have big hands so my normal GLOCK 21s are perfect for me.

The SF fits better for most people.

The 21 sf is not the 4th gen. It is simply a short frame (sf) version of the regular 3rd gen 21. I believe there have been sightings of the actual 4th gen 21 in shops. The actual 4th gen will be as slim as an SF, with the modular grip backstraps which will allow for thikining of the grip, and will also have the new double spring recoil system. Unfortunately the 4TH gen is not California legal and thus limited to law enforcement.

P220 is worth the extra 3 bills plus P226 holster will work for P220 too.

I shot a couple of G21s some time ago (10+ years) and I owned 2 P220s (used police trade-ins made in W Germany) and shot 1 of my friend's. The P220s are the most accurate out of the box 45s I've ever shot for under $1k. Actually I paid less than $500 each about 12 or so years ago. I also like the double action capability & slim profile of the P220.

I've not handled a G21sf yet and I don't doubt it handles great but I do doubt the accuracy potential of any stock G21 compare to any stock P220. I remember the G21s were shooting around 3" 5-shot groups at 25 yards and all 3 P220s I've shot grouped under 2" (most groups under 1.5") at the same distance. Capacity wise G21 does have a leg up on P220 unless you get the extended 10-rnd mag.

Another advantage on P220 is a better laser solution. CrimsonTrace makes a wrap around rubber grip for the P220 that makes the grip even thinner and much better than the factory plastic ones. The CT Laser Grip is more robust, doesn't change the profile of the gun and the laser is closer to the bore axis.

Definitely Glock 21. I had 4 SIG 220's and I got rid of them in favor of other guns. I will say, a German made 220 is quite nice but not nearly as robust as a G21. 220's also have a higher bore axis so they muzzle flip a lot. Plus the DA/SA setup is in my opinion subpar for a defensive gun. The Glock's trigger is the best combat trigger in existence imo. I would highly suggest you go to the range and test fire them because buying a gun on other's opinions and just holding them in the store is a very bad disservice to yourself.

I had a P220. Felt good in my hands and had a lot of nice features that I liked. It was tough for me to get the hang of shooting it and I didn't care that much for the trigger. I sold it because I would rather spend more time on my 1911's. I really liked shooting the G21SF. It's on my buy list because the recoil isn't too bad and it's a great shooter. Already familiar with the Glock family, so it was easy to pick up the G21 and shoot it well right away. Great trigger, simple, accurate, not all that heavy.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info-- yep. I plan to get out and get some trigger time with a G21 SF before purchasing. There is certainly a comfort/familiarity factor with the SIG for me and I do like having the DA/SA option. 1911s are beautiful and I respect them (especially Kimbers), but I think you need to be passionate about owning one-- as Larry Vickers said: "1911 owners are like Harley owners-- you gotta like tinkering with them yourself to keep 'em running."

It’s biased more towards the shooter I would think. I am more than adequate when training with a g21 (although never trained with a g21sf) and p220. The p220 generally tends to take “less work”, for me, to shoot more efficiently. There are p220 sao versions which negates the issue of comfortability training da/sa although running “cocked and locked” may become an entirely different issue you would have to deal with, altogether. Hands down, the sig will have a much better trigger, and to be honest, the glocks could use some work to smoothen it out somewhat. Either way, I would have no qualms using both as my primary carry on the field but do have a preference towards the p220 in typical da/sa. You seriously can’t go wrong with either choice tbh. Just my opinion and take it for what it is, just an opinion. Go out, rent, a few times, not just once to better reinforce which one is more suited to your needs. In the end, your opinion is what matters…

Best advice is to try them both at the range. What may feel good at the store may not be the same after firing a few rounds. They're both great guns, but everyone will have their own preferences. As far as non-1911 .45's you've listed, I prefer the Sig P220-ST. Smooth trigger, I get tighter groups and I'm more accurate w/ it compared to the Glock 21SF.

Get the 21SF (I have two 21s). Put the extra $300 towards ammo and accessories. Or get the 21SF and put the extra money into your 1911 savings account. The Sigs are great guns but I favor Glock. Ultimately, it comes down to what is better for YOU.

I recently had to weigh the two against each other. We just got authorized glocks at work. I went with the Glock 21 SF. This is why.

                          *More rounds
*no double action on the initial trigger pull.
                          *lighter weight
                          *price

And after shooting both for hours back to back, I believe the Sig is a more accurate weapon, but it requires more skill to shoot it to its potential. The Glock requires less effort to fire accurately.

These are all personal opinions... and you know what they say about opinions...

I agree with previous posters. You need to shoot both. I would not have been able to make a decision without the range.

Where do you live. You can shoot mine before I get rid of the sig if you are near the LA area.

Thanks again for the valuable insight as well as the offer to try your gun. Your pros for the G21 are all good ones. I'm actually down in the San Diego area-- my buddy has a P220 Elite so I'll take that and try to rent a G21SF at my local range.

the G21 and G21SF are too bulky for me to hold comfortably.

i'd have to go with a w german Sig Sauer P220 .45 ACP.
