Can I buy one of these in california through a gun dealer or are they still illegal? Do they make a 10rnd mag for this yet?

While not on the Roster, they are deemed not legal for sale in CA. The mags can be blocked to 10 rounds, unless you go with a XDM 45 which will accept XD mags. In order to get around the Roster you can send it to a 0 FFL and have it converted and then dros it. Once your 10 days are up you can convert it back and have some fun with your new toy. There is a SSE (Single Shot Exemption) thread in the gunsmith section I believe.

So I could buy it from bud's gun shop, ship it to an FFL in CA. have them convert the mag and I'm done?

Doubt buds will ship that to CA unless you can prove you're LE or something.

The Springfield Armory XDM series has never been illegal in CA.
However, since they are not on the approved list, they can not be transfered by a CA FFL dealer to a non-exempt person.

As a CA LEO, you can buy one from a CA FFL dealer.

As a non-exempt person, you can buy one modified as a dimensionally compliant single-shot pistol.

HS Produkt and Springfield Armory have no intentions of ever producing a factory 10 round magazine for the XDM-9/XDM-40 series of pistols.

The XDM-45 uses the same magazine as the XD-45, so factory 10 round magazines are available.
