Been interested in the Hack sights, so I tried an improvised version on my 1911.
Here's a picture of a hack sight for an M&P for reference:

Bought a can of Testors Competition Orange & 3pk of brushes, ~$8
Doesn't come in a bottle so I had to spray onto a sheet of AL foil and use that.

Front sight before:

After:

From messing with it around the house, I'm noticing a few things:
Real hacks are probably better due to the concentric bright orange ring around the tritium. On mine, it can be hard to get a super fast sight picture due to the orange paint leading all the way to the top of the sight as opposed to it being black - the black stands out more on whatever background you're aiming at. Also, a evenly spaced circle front is better than a rectangular lop sided front, but I don't think they even make a hack front for a 1911.
I might try consolidating the orange paint to a small square immediately surrounding the tritium vial & a bit of the channel itself, leaving the bottom and very top of the sight black to better replicate the evenness of the hack sight (square vs circle).
Next step would be to sell off my tritium rears & get a plain/serrated U notch or wider channel rear.
