    1911 grips

My brother is a competition shooter. He shoots a Kimber and some other 1911. For his birthday I want to surprize him by engraving/checkering a set or two of 1911 grips. My question is, are all 1911 grips the same as in how they will fit?
I dont want to ask him because he will know what Im up to. Thanx.

Depends on the size of 1911 and whether or not it has an ambidextrous safety. Check on midwayusa.com for all sorts of blank grips made out of different kinds of woods. I bought a set of the ebony and they were nice. GL

I know Sig's 1911's have a different kind of grip(stock) size. I think the screw bushing are spaced differently than normal 1911's but you said your brother has a Kimber and I have not heard such things from Kimbers so my guess is that most standard GI 1911 grips will fit.

      My 2 cents

this is not true... at least in my case. i have owned 2 sig 1911s and both of them had standard 1911 grips.

to the OP, you do need to find out if he has a double stack 1911 or single stack or goverment (large frame) or officer (small frame)... im sure he at least has 1 single stack gov, if you said he has multiple ones.

but try to just ask to look at his gun 1911s. say you wanna check em out, think they are cool im sure he will show you

then you can decern what they are exactly. you will know if they are single or double stack. and better yet... you will know what "look" you want to give to them

grips change the feel and everything about a gun. so if you give him a engraved sick looking red/wood grips.... might not look as good as maybe brown ones... or mecarta (i know i cant spell ) or aluminum etc

if you can, and have plenty of time to do so... tell him you wanna see them, take pictures of em. "oh these are so sick! i want to put them as my wallpaper on my phone!" and then show us the guns and we can give you a even better opinion of what we all think

or i just had to much wine already and shouldnt be typing this much.... have fun!

Standard or slim? With magwell or not? Ambidexterous safety or standard?

You may be thinking of Taurus 1911s not Sig. Sig 1911s are standard.

Looks like a full size! You do know that he is running VZ Operators II's. Those are $65 dollar grips.

You want standard thickness Gov't size grips to match what he's got. If he likes the thumb relief on the VZ's he may not like standard grips without one.

If he's already running VZ grips, then you will not be able to buy him a better set of grips. Might want to look at something else to get him

(Seriously. I'm not kidding. VZ's are the Ferrari of grips. I and many others run them exclusively on their 1911's).

You are correct! I didn't know how to put it with out being rude, but VZ's are some of the best grips you can buy. So getting him to switch to other grips may be pretty hard.
