S&W 4006

I have the oppurtunity to purchase a S&W 4006 for less than $200 .

The pistol is in good mechanical condition, but suffers cosmetic wear due to being carried in a holster. Other than being built like a tank and feeding anything that is thrown at it, are there any other "pros" to this pistol?

I am planning on buying it, and then offering it as a partial trade for either a Glock, M&P, or XD.

What potential value does this gun hold? The highest I have seen a used one sell for is around $500, and the lowest being $350. I'm guessing I should be able to get close to $400 in trade value right?

I love the 3rd gen s&w's. Had them in the 90's and even now. Great gun! $350-$400 is about right. There is a few on gunbroker for $350 "buy now". So, your in the ball park.

The biggest "con" to this pistol seems the lack of interest and the general lack of popularity.

From the lack of responses and the overall limited amount of threads that I have found, I conclude that this pistol is not popular among the CA firearms community.

Popularity is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is whether the owner likes it.
You already think that the resale value is around twice what you will pay for it.
I do not understand why you are conflicted. You can buy a gun for cheap. If you like it, keep it and shoot it. Win.
If you don't like it, sell it for a good profit. Also a win.
I have never polished or buffed a stainless gun. I am told it can work very well.
What do you think is the risk?

When summitgunbroker has the police buy back pistols in stock they only go for around $250-290 ish. Of course they've kind of dried up now so maybe that changes things?

I wouldn't buy it. A 4006 was my first handgun and it has numerous flaws.

#1 I learned how to clear type 3 malfunctions because of my 4006.
#2 It's too heavy
#3 It has that stupid slide mounted safety/decocker
#4 the DA trigger pull is too long and heavy but it does have a very nice short reset.

I can't think of any niche a 4006 would fill and I sold mine.

I also owned a S&W Model 4006 and a S&W Model 4014.
I dumped them as soon as I could.

To be honest...
In the past, I owned several 3rd gen S&W (3914, 4006, 4014, 5904) and I am biased aganist them. I tried to like them, but S&W did it's best to make me dislike them. The only ones that are any good are the .45ACP and 10x25mm ones. The rest are not so good.

During the time period when .40S&W started catching on, lots of LE agencies adopted the S&W Model 4006 or a variant of it.
Now, almost all of the LE agencies have dumped it in favor of better .40S&W pistols. The CHP is the only major LE agency that issues a .40S&W 3rd gen S&W (Model 4006TSW) and, rumors are, they are looking at replacing it with the S&W M&P40.
