1911 Issue

I don't typically shoot my Colt 1911, as it is my Academy Pistol, and a real looker (if you ask nicely, I might post a picture) But neither do I have any use for a pistol that is soley a "Display piece"

anyway, I was out shooting Thursday and had an issue with the slide not locking to the rear after the magazine was empty, and when I do lock it back, it slams forward when I eject the mag. My first inclination (and deepest hope) is that this is simply an issue with the magazine, but it doesn't do it every time, and it has done this before, if I remember correctly, with more than one mag. I hope that the case is that I'm just shooting with POS mags, but they came from Colt, or were bought new and as I don't shoot it often, they arn't exactly worn out.

I love my 1911, and for more than just sentimental reasons - it shoots like a dream, and there is little question in my mind as to how this frame has maintained itself for 100 years - so I need to get this issue fixed ASAP. any suggestions?

there might be 2 issues. one could be the mag and the other is the slide release.

With an empty mag, the follower should lift the slide catch into position and lock it open. If it does not work it is usually the mag follower not engaging firmly enough to hold the slide open. But, once it is locked open, releasing the mag should have no effect unless the slide lock is gummed up so it is not engaging properly. Try making sure the slide release/ catch is free and moving completely.

The slide stop may not be engaging fully. Check to see what it looks like after you draw the slide back and post that picture. If it is a slide stop problem, it could need fitting, or your plunger may not be moving freely in the plunger tube. Does the plunger move freely when you press it in?

And although the Gasden Flag did fly in Baghdad, my 1911 did not join me overseas, despite what some recent threads would lead readers to beleive about carrying personal weapons in combat.
