My Grandpa doesnt have many stories about the war because he was very removed from the "up close and personal" combat. The closest was when he saw the ship next to them shoot down a kamikaze. He served on the destroyer under command of the navy commodant (If thats the right name. cant remember exactly who he 'represented'). Anyways, whatever ship he was on, he took over control of communications and deciphered messages with a ECM (Electronic Cypher Machine - Super top secret).

He went to law school, passed the bar, and was recruited by the FBI. The Navy picked him up as an officer before the FBI got a chance because of the war.

Ill get a picture of the receipt.

Keep it and frame it. I have a couple of framed photos of my grandfather during the occupation of the Pacific. I never get tired of looking at it and makes me proud of my grandpa and what he and many others went thru during WW2.

The best treasure wasn't the 1911 or the paper.....it was the time spent with grandpa, listening to his stories and honoring his service. Good job.

I was lucky enough to spend a few hours talking with my grandpa about his service during WWII before he passed He was a Navy pilot. He told me all about his training and then about missions he flew in the Pacific. It was awesome to hear his experiences and the most amazing part: He was flying a mission near Japan when they dropped the A-Bomb on Hiroshima... They saw the mushroom cloud from the air, but didn't know what it was! Guess that was classified at the time.

Awesome stuff. Those "uninteresting papers" are likely worth their weight in gold. I am heavy in family history and have found some awesome information in piles of "uninteresting papers."

Sadly I did not get the time with my grandfathers I would have liked and now it is not an option. Spend all the time you can with him today, because tomorrow you may not have that option.

That pistol and receipt plus accessories are a priceless heirloom.

same here, both my grandfathers fought in THE WAR but passed before i was old enough to appreciate it and talk to them about it. i continue to find things out about them from my parents and it's all priceless.

Almost all ships in the Pacific had fighting going on. He may have been removed from close combat, but his ship was likely fired upon and fired against enemies.

My grandpa, a Marine, stationed on a ship for transport was a 20mm gunner. He shot down many planes and the stories he has will make the hair on your neck stand straight up.

thats what I would have thought, but when I asked, the only thing he said he saw was the one plane get shot down. He was on a destroyer, so I would think he saw more "action", but he said he didn't. He also served in Korea, doing the same job and thats where he was promoted to Lt. Commander i believe.

He'll be 94 years old in July and remembers EVERYTHING. he is still very sharp and has a better memory than me. The Navy is the reason we were all born in San Diego, starting with my dad in '54. Im still here today.
