Adding a Rail to an older pistol

Ok I am thinking of maybe adding a rail to my S&W 4506, but not sure if it would be cost effective, or if I am even able to do something like that. Any on here have any info?

Brownells sells a rail, stainless or blued. I've seen a few attached, actually looks pretty good and is solid. I'm not at all a fan of the set up, just my preference. But the part is well made and looks "right" on the gun. IIRC costs about $55.00, held on by 3 screws.

Novak Sights has one for a 1911. It may work, but I'll bet they would be able to answer your questions as to fit...it may be able to be contoured for your frame by a machinist.

I have been thinking about doing the same thing to my 4506. I didn't see any stainless blank or universal rail stock at brownells. Only aluminum and carbon steel. Novak does have the 1911 in stainless but I am not sure if the radius is even close to fitting. Time to get out the radius gauges and check to see if a 1911 is close to the 4506.
I may find some stainless stock and machine my own rail and mount it if the novak doesn't come close.

Custom 1911 smiths put add on rails to 1911s so it's certainly a viable option.

My biggest concern would be finding a holster that would fit it.

i wanted to do the same thing with my gen 2 glock 23 so i picked up one of those CAA under barrel rail mounts. the thing mounts up very solid with no movement at all. in the end it stuck out past the barrel quite a bit, so i trimmed it back as close as i could but i'm happy with the results. i'm not sure if they make them for your model, you might want to check it out. i recommend them highly.
