    Help with 1911 Value

    Hello everyone!

I've been itching for a 1911 for a while (preferably a full size) and my coworker is offering to sell me his springfield armory loaded ultra compact for $600.

It's not pefect (has a couple small idiot marks near the slide stop)

Is this something I can have for a while and get my money back? Or even turn a small profit?

Please let me know what you think!

I've seen their compacts go for anything from $800 and up online for a brand new one.

Valuing a gun you cannot see is impossible so cannot give you any advice there.

Gun values over time fluctuate like everything, but generally speaking... they never get cheaper. The longer you hold onto it, the more likely you will turn a profit on it. The more you use or customize it, the less profit you'd make.

Here are the best pictures I was able to get of the gun, it was disassembled at the time and just slid together for the pictures.

MSRP on a new one is $1050. $600 seems like a reasonable price for a used one, assuming it is fully functional and no hidden problems. Since he is a friend, ask him to let you shoot it at the range to see how it functions. If there are problems you can say no thanks. Personally, I would buy it if the offer was available to me. A gun is only worth what you are willing to pay for it. If you want to buy it to have a shooter you can enjoy, it looks like a good deal. If you want to buy it so you can try to resell it and make a profit, the chances of making enough to make it worthwhile seem kind of slim.

The pics look pretty good and $600 sounds like a decent price, but I would want to check out the wear and tear carefully before I bought it. Check out youtube for vids on how to evaluate a used 1911. There's some good info posted there.

I would buy it for $600, it is not a "give it to you" price, but still a good price.

I ended up buying it. The gun as far as wear and tear goes is great, it has less than 300 rounds through it and I got a box of magtech .45 with it. The only thing to complain about are a couple of scratches on the slide and frame from the slide stop. Is it supposed to be an absolute ***** to get it back in?

No. It's called an idiot mark for a reason.
