Gunsmith for 1911 checkering in Sac area?

Hey everyone, I was looking to get my new Springfield MC Operator 1911's front strap checkered, and I was thinking about whether or not it was worth it to send it to springfield and get it checkered for $150 (not including shipping). Does anyone know of a gunsmith that does good checkering in the Sacramento/Yolo County area?

    Thanks.

You might try J&G Gunsmithing in Granite Bay.(916)782-7075 If they don't I'm sure they will know someone that will. They have been in buisness forever.

I'd like to tag this thread. Is your SA stainless or matte black type of finish? Reason I ask is you may want to refinish it in Melonite or similar tough black finish. I'm looking to see the current cost for getting a 1911 done, but requires the chipping nickel stipped.

It's actually armory kote in OD green from Springfield. I want it refinished anyways, so I think I might just send it direct to springfield.. but I am still open to other options.

I'll be checkering my Caspian 10mm/40 and Springfield in the near future, it's refinishing my old Caspian that's getting to me.

Another recommendation for J&G here. The shop has three gunsmiths on staff and does a ton of gunsmithing work plus builds custom rifles. Plus the shop has the best selection of used guns in the Sack-a-tomatoes area. A little hard to get to (be sure to check out the Mediterranena-style mansion for sale just down the street) but well worth the effort.

I don't know anything about J&G, they may be wonderful but... I think Springfield Armory's Custom Shop is hard to beat for value, convenience and turn-around, especially since the OP will need to have the firearm refinished.

I don't have an answer to your question but keep in mind that shipping to and from SA will cost you around $100 or more.
