A while back I picked up a gently used Kimber Custom II 45 ACP. Today I made my first trip to an actual range where I could see how well I can shoot it and really see how it performs.
Gun: Kimber Custom II
Caliber: 45ACP
Magazines: 1 Wilson Combat and 2 Chip McCormick Power 10s.
Ammo: Magtech 230gr 45ACP Ball
Distance: 25 yards
Bear in mind I am jumping up in caliber from 9mm to 45ACP, switching to a totally different action, and that the distance is 25 yards and not the usual 10 people post. Also I am 3 months rusty - which is unforgivable.
RIGHT TARGET: 85 rounds working at full speed. Shooting controlled pairs and non-standard 3-5 rounds starting from the low ready with the safety on. I would have preferred to train from the holster, but range rules would not allow it. Mostly I was just shooting for fun and not forcing myself to do trigger control drills when I shot beyond the fist size group I prefer. I just wanted to break the gun in and she how I liked it. I wasn't busting my own chops on my performance like I normally do.
LEFT TARGET: At about round 50 plus I stopped and switched to the fresh target to the side of me. I shot around 10 or so rounds just working on trigger control because in having fun, I was getting a few fliers. It was obvious that I was jerking the trigger and that I was starting to feel a little fatigued. So I do notice the recoil as time goes by more so than I do on the Glock 9mm. Because with the Glock this would have been a nice tight group. The again, I am three months rusty.
ISSUES: I had two failures to eject with the Wilson Combat magazine. Both the last round. Could just be that the magazine is brand new. Could also be that the previous owner didn't completely break in the 1911. Time will tell.
CONCLUSION: I like it. I was worried the 45ACP would have too much recoil for me. But the recoil was not bothersome at all. I got fatigued a lot faster, but the recoil on the individual shots and groupings of shots didn't bother me like I imagined they would. Coming from a Glock, the safety is going to take some getting used to. However, the shorter lighter trigger pull and extremely short reset are a major plus. Basically, I have a lot of training to do before the 1911 becomes second nature like the Glock is for me. But I am looking forward to it.
