I had a question. do the locks that are built into the gun, such as those on a new taurus count the same as it being in a locked container? they still require a key to make it ready to shoot.

Built in gun locks

No.
The transport requirement is for a fully enclosed locked container - no way a gun lock, external or internal, can satisfy that.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page

I just picked up my Raging Bull the other day and the guy said the built in locks don't count. My guess is because a cop can't know it's locked from a distance.
I did learn something though. I would always put my unloaded rifles and handguns into rifle/pistol rugs and throw them into two giant duffel bags.
Had no idea that handguns had to be locked during transporting. I always thought they just had to be unloaded in a case, not in glove box, and behind or under seats.
Would it be ok ya think if I locked up the two duffel bags instead of buying a dozen or so small locks?Sent from Cyber Space, using the Force!Comment

Not sure if a cable lock counts as a locked container either.Don't take refuge in the false security of consensus.

The built in gun lock satisfies (depending on the FFL) the child-safe requirement.
Neither the built in gun lock nor the child-safe lock have any legal use 30 seconds after you walk out of the gun shop.- Rich

Absolutely does not.
The law states "Secure, locked container"
The lock must be a combination lock, padlock, or something similar.
A sandwich bag with a zip-tie through it does not count.
Unless you desire to use the cable lock to keep kids from getting access, just give the cable lock to a motorcyclist. They make decent helmet locks (even though most of them are keyed alike).
Has nothing to do with a cop knowing if it's locked or not. The law states "Secure, locked container" and that is defined as a container that completely encloses the gun.
They can be behind or under your seat, as long as they are in a locked container.Had no idea that handguns had to be locked during transporting. I always thought they just had to be unloaded in a case, not in glove box, and behind or under seats.
Yes, as long as you can't manipulate the zippers to gain access with the locks installed. Many cheaper or more flexible zippers can be spread with the pulls locked together.Would it be ok ya think if I locked up the two duffel bags instead of buying a dozen or so small locks?Last edited by Cokebottle; 05-20-2011, 6:02 PM.- Rich

Yes and no.
The Federal Rights-Free-School-Zone law requires that all firearms be either in a locked container, or a locked "fixture" such as a gun rack, police car style shotgun rack, etc....
But outside of the GFSZ, that is correct. PC12025 only applies to guns "capable of being concealed" which has legal precedent as "handgun"
And of course, it's still a dumb law because an AR/AK pistol is not effectively concealed on the person when not wearing a heavy coat... and I know people who could conceal a minimum-length rimfire rifle.- Rich
