Suggestion needed for back country pistol

I do alot of back country fly fishing and like to carry a little piece of mind with me. I am trying to find a nice pistol that can handle getting wet due to either crossing deep streams or the possible slip and fall into the water. I don't need alot of stopping power for bears, I have spray for that, but something that will be good enough if the wrong situation ever occurs. I would normally take my old 1911 but the weight is an issue. So lightweight would be another bonus, plus when I get my CCL it would then be my main concealed carry piece.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Scott

And since this is my first post, howdy everyone and thanks for the great board.

    Welcome the the board.

If you don't need it specifically for bears, but more for two-legged crits, then a Glock is pretty hard to beat.

No worries in the rain, if you drop it in the creek, etc. Lighter and more compact than, say a .44Mag. revolver.

If you want something more powerful, in the remote chance bear spray doesn't work, then perhaps a Glock 20 in 10mm loaded with the hot/hunting loads. The smaller G29 10mm is avaiable, but has a bit snappier recoil.

Imho, though, I don't think they would make an ideal CCW for everyday use. Ammo is harder to find and expensive than 9mm, .40, or .45ACP. You want to be able to afford to practice a lot...

Since you already have a 1911, I assume in .45ACP, you might want to check out a G21 or the more compact G30 (.45ACP). Even more compact is the G36, but it does have a pretty snappy recoil. The G30 is not bad at all, compared to a 1911...

If you need something lighter and flatter and/or with smaller grips than the Glock .45's, check out the Glock .40's or 9mm's.

Try them at the rental ranges before you buy...

      Welcome to the forum.

      I recommend a Glock 21SF.

Looks like I am going to have to take a look at Glocks, I was never a big fan of them but they must be good if so many people have recommended them to me. Off to the range to make some noise and smell that sweet smell of powder.

You know in all my back country trips I have taken in the last couple of years I have yet to see a bear. On average I go back country about 20 times a year, and with the smell of fish on me you would think that I would eventually see one, lucky I haven't but I am ready for one.

Thanks for the information. And as for the question about the caliber of my 1911, yes it is a 45ACP and it was also made in 1919 and shoots just as good as most guns I have shot. I love old Colts!!!

Unless you are specifically worried about bears, I'd look for a nice .357 mag revolver. That's what my trail gun is.

Not worried about bears, I have spray for that. But I do have a couple .357 revolvers as well as some 45 long colts. But mainly looking for something that I can carry concealed as to not scare other hikers.

Scaring hikers can be very fun.

In all seriousness though, we need de-brainwash people in society from the idea that people carrying guns should be feared.

If you're going to look at Glocks, you might as well consider the Springfield XD as well. In my experience, and therefore in my opinion, they're on-par with Glocks as far as reliability, but they have the added bonus of a grip-safety so you don't end up like this guy: http://www.itstactical.com/warcom/fi...al-discharges/

Personally, I like the added assurance of a grip-safety, and being a 1911 guy, you probably won't mind either. Just some food for thought. Both the XD and the Glock are excellent firearms.

I have a Smith & Wesson Model 386sc .357 magnum revolver I like very much for general outdoor use. It lets me select from a wide range of loads including shotshells or heavy self-defense loads. 18.5 ounced unloaded.

If I'm in serious bear country I take my 3" rb 629 in .44mag.

If it's 4 legged predators I may encounter, I carry my Taurus Total Titanium Tracker in .41 mag. - 24 ounces of potent firepower.

If it's 2 legged predators I may encounter, I carry my Sig P228 with legal hi-caps. But even better would be any poly frame 9mm like a Glock if you have the legal hi-cap mags.

If I'm actually planning on getting water in it, I'd probably feel better with a revolver. I like the offerings in .327 Federal these days. Kind of cool that you can also shoot .32 mag, .32 long, and .32 short through it.

CDNN has the 6-shot, 2" barrel, all-stainless Taurus M327 on sale for $279 through this Friday.

Well, since we are all opining...

I Just don't like revolvers but they are ultra reliable—just don't expect you'll live if you needed more than six. if you are competent with non-safety firearms and don't mind poly frames—Glock in 9mm. If you'd prefer to go heavier/sturdier and prefer a de-cocker DA (less chance of AD) Sig 226 or 229 in 9mm (the 226 is the choice of the SEALs when forced to to use the Beretta 92 and it malfunctioned too many times). If it's good enough for them...well that's my opinion.
