SA Loaded Back From SA Custom Shop (plus More Pics)

Recently got my SA Loaded back the custom shop. Sent it in for a FTF problem, then had it routed to the custom shop for some minor mods. Had an S&A Magwell installed (blended), FS checkering at 25 LPI and a trigger job at ~5.0 lbs. (wish I had gone lower, LOL).

I had an issue with the finish, as seen in the pics. Not really enough to make me contact SA; am I wrong here? Is that unsatisfactory? They did refinish it for free (Parckerization)... Thoughts???

Went to the range today, but the range was closed! Decided NOT to drive the 20 miles + to an indoor range close by, as I prefer outdoor shooting nowadays.

But here's a couple of pics of what I would have shot had the range been open:

5# is pretty heavy. IMO 3 to 3.5# is just right for a range piece. Maybe a tad less for really serious competitors.

A crisp 4.5-5lb trigger is right where I like it, I wouldn't use a gun with a 3.5pm trigger for anything but the range. I definitely would not carry it or use it for HD. Anyhow, nice mods! Tastefully done. That rubbing on your slide is pretty common. You can get it fixed or just leave it alone....it's not going to hurt anything. I have the same happening on my Mil-Spec. After putting maybe 1500 rounds through it, there was no more rubbing. I just cold Blued it to get it black again and forgot about it.

@Colt-45 - they come standard with trijicon NS.

@chiselchst - is that the factory finish on your CBOB or did you have it re-finished. It could be the lighting, but it looks a bit dark for the DW CBOB factory finish.

What did they charge you for checkering if you don't mind my asking?

It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

Their checkerring prices vary based upon hand cut or machine cut, and what l.p.i. you get. Low of $150 to high of $250. You'll also need refinishing unless you have a stainless frame.

For the custom shop packages and pricing, go to http://www.springfield-armory.com/custom.php and click on the 1911-a1 custom worksheet to download the .pdf.

Nice, but I hope you got everything you wanted from the Custom Shop. I hate to waste handgun transit and not get everything I would want especially from a Custom Shop detour.

A 5.0 pound trigger is not a big deal as long as you like how it breaks and travels. You could mess around and try a lighter mainspring to lighten the pull, but I wouldn't go more than 2 pounds lower than what the Custom Shop put in your gun.

Nice pistol. The rubbing just shows it's been shot and not a BBQ gun. Nicest guns I know are ugly to look at but shoot like a dream and are used regularly.
A 5lb. trigger is not all that bad unless you are trying to shoot Bullseye Competition at 50yards. It's workable and if it's from SA Custom it's probably a clean "crisp" break with no over travel. I have 4.5lb. triggers from SA on a couple of my 1911's and really I can't feel a difference once the buzzer goes off. If this is a duel pupose piece, leave it alone. If it's a dedicated range gun only a replacement spring set will reduce your trigger pull. Please don't monkey around with the gun yourself unless you are qualified to do so. Too many guns are ruined by owners trying to make them better.
BTW 25 lpi checkering is nice....20 lines and you'd feel it after a few rounds, SA makes some sharp machine cut checkering.

I hope you don' think spring changes need qualifications. Btw, I think checkering done by the Custom Shop is done by hand and not as sharp as the machine chekering.

It's an option (more $) to have it done by hand. Most shops are done by machine and cleaned up by hand. Very few actually do hand checkering any more. Usually, if it's perfect...it's from a machine. You can tell when it's been done by hand. It's all a prestige/pride of ownership thing. Gimme perfect machine checkering ANY day.

The gun was re-finished (for free by SA). It's the parkerized finish. It came back with those marks. The marks were not there when originally sent in. I think I'll email Deb, or the CS and send a pic. Racking the slide, I don't even think it rubs there...?

                              They are Trijicon NS's I'm 98% sure.

The checkering ordered was 25 LPI, machine checkering.

The trigger has a very crisp break, no ever travel. But wish I had gone with 4-4.5 lbs. The trigger isn't even as good as my stock Dan Wesson's, LOL. I thinks it's due to the 5.0 lbs. It was a last minute additioin to the work list...should have thought it through better. It is a range gun.

Hopefully I can get out with it tomorrow...

                              Thanks!
