    I want my USP-Tactical back.

I have a USP Tactical .40 that I purchased when I was stationed in WA. I was considered a resident due to military orders. I moved back to CA in 2008 and fearing of breaking the laws in CA, I left my Tactical with a friend in WA. I want it back here in CA. Can I personally just import it into CA myself? Will I be able to FFL transfer a non approved pistol even though it is mine? I was told I have to change the barrel out to bring it into this state. Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

That's the one with the threaded barrel right?

I'm not sure on this at all, so I'll keep my mouth shut Hopefully someone will know the answer to this one outright.

Yes, it has a threaded end barrel.

You need to either install a non threaded standard USP barrel, weld a thread protector onto the original barrel, weld a faux suppressor onto the original barrel, weld a compensator, cut the thread and recrown the original barrel, or permanently affix a 10 round magazine.

The problem isn't that the gun isn't on the roster. The problem is that the gun has a banned assault weapon feature on it.

While we're here arguing about the latest high tech running shoes, there's some Kenyan out there running barefoot. Guess who's gonna win the marathon?

you already owned the pistol. You moved to CA and chose to store the pistol out of state. Find the form for registering a pistol as a new resident, and pay the 19$ fee.

DEFINITELY TAKE THE ASSAULT WEAPON ADVICE.
AW feature is threaded barrel. Userm4 gave a list of ways to eliminate its status as a threaded barrel. He also mentioned that if you wish to keep the threaded barrel, you must make your pistol into a "fixed magazine" configuration; which means you will need to eliminate the magazine release, or modify it in some way so as to require a tool to remove (See: AR15 bullet buttons and similar).

If you bring it to CA the threads on the barrel will cause you to become evil and go on a kitten, baby, puppy killing spree.

To protect you from yourself your legislators have made sure to make it illegal to own.

Don't you feel safer? Now please give yourself a hug and drink the koolaid.

I don't think anyone mentioned that you can own the threaded barrel as long as it's never installed in the pistol while it's in California. Personally I'd just get another factory barrel (that's not threaded) and use that one while in this state and keep the threaded one for either shooting out of state or for that magical day when California sees the error of it's ways and changes the stupid gun laws.

are u still in the military? is it possible to have a senior officer sign off on your threaded barrel for CA...??

and yes, of course u can just keep the threaded barrel and not have it installed/assembled on the gun.

You bought it. It's your gun. The fact it's not on the handgun Roster is irrelevant- that only covers sale from FFL 'inventory'.

                  However:
                  • its threaded barrel makes the gun an assault weapon.

                  • you have 60 days from bringing your gun in to file papers on it
w/DOJ as a "Personal Handgun Importer" (+$19 fee).
                  • #2 above may trigger slight drama about #1, so make sure
                    you're legal.

You CAN bring in this gun with the barrel SEPARATE and not installed - as there is no 'constructive possession' for CA-defined assault weapons.

[In theory you could also bring this gun in assembled with barrel IF there is a magazine lock ("BulletButton"-style) that requires a tool to remove the magazine, as this makes the gun NOT have a 'detachable magazine' per formal regulatory definition, and pulls this gun configuration out of AW classification - providing the magazine holds only 10 rounds or less!]

However, it's much easier to just separate the barrel and get a new nonthreaded one so you have a gun in a much more useable configuration.]

I recommend having the gun shipped or transported with the barrel quite separate (separate package, or fly back with it with barrel in your shave kit while gun is in separate case, ec.)

To *use* your gun in CA you could either:
                  • turn the threads down on your existing barrel
                  • get a replacement factory barrel & have its threads turned down;
                  • get a replacement unthreaded aftermarket barrel equivalent
                    (if it exists).

There is a small but nonzero chance that your required handgun registration - filed as a "Personal handgun importer" - of a gun known to have been sold in default 'assault weapon' format may in fact trigger inquiries from DOJ, including having a DOJ agent visit and asking to inspect gun.

[If the DOJ agents do not have a warrant, tell them to go pound sand - though a lot of people apparantly wilt when faced with such.] *DO* make sure the rest of your life is OK and that all of your guns are legal, that you haven't illegally imported hicap mags that you didn't own in CA before 2000, aren't growing pot plants, don't have prescription meds not prescribed to you, etc.]

Oh - do NOT bring in hicap mags that you did not own nor acquire in CA on or before 12/31/1999.
