    Buying used handgun, Round count.

I'm on the brink of buying a used firearm from a friend. Hes had it for a few years now and the price is just right, however. As far as round count goes, how many is too many? I see round counts listed in all firearms for sale, heck I even posted how many I had on an old handgun when I sold it. It makes sense in my head as far as comparing into a used car, you want to know how many miles it has. Should I avoid a handgun that has had more than XXXX's rounds fired through it? Also what effect does it have on the weapon? I apologize if this is something that has been asked a million times. but i'm sure there are others wondering as well.

Round count really doesn't make a difference if the gun has been babied. Most of the time you wont' know the difference between a gun that has 500 rounds through it and one that has 5,000 if properly cared for.

Only thing that MIGHT need to be replaced is the recoil spring.

    What gun is in question?

It depends on the gun, ammo, barrel, leaning routines, etc....

You can destroy a gun in 500 rounds, or a gun can still be pristine after 20,000 rounds.

And considering that guns have no odometer and sellers have no problem being less than honest about round count, it's not something I would be overly concerned with as long as the gun looks, feels, and fires well.

I always get a laugh when I see 4-sale listings indicating 50-100 rounds and they've had the gun for years. I've never shot LESS than 150 rounds through any of my guns in a single range trip. I've put 1000 through my XD9 in one weekend in the desert.
The only one that was less was the Ruger LCR that I got for my wife and she hated it. I put about 70 rounds through it and put it back in the box until a friend bought it a couple of months later.

Someone joked about Calguns should have a 2k round challenge like other forums do... but from looking at the marketplace, you wouldn't think that Calgunners ever put more than 50 rounds down the pipe.

The firearm i'm looking at is a Springfield XD service in 9mm. I for fact know it hasn't been babied or is a safe queen. Its been carried and has had more than 3k. Visually it looks worn. I haven't shot it yet but I will do so before I buy it.

Used XD's usually run in the $400-450 range, especially if it's well worn.

XD should be no problem, all reports I have seen show it to be a very reliable gun. But in the end, every gun is different, make sure you strip it and check it yourself.

Some people say taurus is garbage and they have problems right out of the box, other people report having thier taurus for 20+ years, 20,000+ rounds through it and 0 problems. Each gun is different, some companies just seem to have better batting averages with reliability than others.

As long as the gun in good shape and functions properly I am not concerned with round count unless we are talking 20,000 plus rounds. Because I may need to get a new barrel it may make a difference in what I would pay. I laugh to when I see 100 rounds fired and the gun is 2-3 years old. I shoot between 100-200 rounds almost every trip to the range with a particular gun. I had a Sig listed here a few weeks that had 3000+ rounds through it in just over a year. That was not including the 1911. I have over 500 rounds through my G19 and I picked it up from the dealer on the 5th of this month. I guess some of us are a little odd, we shoot what we have. 3000 rounds through an XD should be nothing at all. That gun's just getting started. As long as it was otherwise properly cared for and not abused, go for it.

If it's dirty as heck, lower your offering price and go from there. Dirt isn't a problem, you can clean that up.. it's just cosmetic.

Practically every handgun I've bought in the last 30 years has a 0-50 round count.

                  S&W Model 547 - round count 0

Colt Mustang Plus II - round count 0

                  S&W Model 49 - round count 10

Colt Agent - round count <50

Colt SAA - round count 0

I could go on, but there are some of us out here that have one or two "go-to" handguns and the rest are left to gather dust in the safe.

I wouldn't be too worried about 3k rounds as long as it has been reasonably taken care of and functions well. My XD40 has probably close to 7k rounds in the past 3 years and has been 100% reliable since day one.

Yup, 3k shouldn't be a problem. I would replace the extractor, and recoil spring just to be safe. Maybe some other parts too. Just keep her well lubed.

When I see ads in the marketplace advertising round counts, I typically ignore them and just try to look at pictures and overall wear. I too, am skeptical when I see things like "less than 100 rounds thru her!" - particularly if it's a handgun. If it's a high power bolt rifle, then yeah, I'll probably believe that you might have only put a box of rounds (20) downrange to sight in the scope, but handguns? Come on, nobody I've ever seen at the range shoots less than a box of shells in any one range trip, and especially if it's an auto.

Get it. 3k rounds isn't outrageous. If the price is right I don't mind some holster wear. None of my guns are safe queens.
