Magazine storage

I have a general question -- say you have 10-15 handguns and each has 5-10 magazines. How do you mark them, store them, and take to range?

Almost all mine are blue/black double stack 9mm so they all look about the same (although the Glock mags are a little easier to pick out). So if I jumble them up/mix them together then I have to examine several of them to select the right ones to take to the range.

They are marked 1,2,3,...x etc. for each different gun so I have a number of mags marked "1", etc.

If I try to separate them and have "like" mags together I need lots of containers - I tried that and bought many containers that I didn't like and they took too much room in the garage.

I don't want to go to the range and not have the right mag so for a while I would take a messanger bag with most/all of my mags but that seems overkill . I wouldn't mind a toolbox or similar if it had dividers or sections that would hold 5-7 double stack mags but couldn't find that.

So what do you do - hunt through your mags on range day to grab a few for the right gun, or take them all? Or something in between?

First off I don't own as many handguns as you do, thus I have less mags tO deal with.

When I go to the range I most of the time bring only 2 handguns. Before I go I dig out 4 of my range mags Out of a ammo can. (2 Per gun).

I mark my mags with whiteout. If I had as many mags as you do I would get a big tackle box or 50 cal ammo can and section it off into compartments. Hope this helps.

You take 15 handguns to the range at one time? Wow let me know if you need a range buddy and we can make it 20

I like your idea of ammo cans with dividers. No-I don't take 15 guns to the range. The only reason to take all mags (or preferably 1 for each gun) would be so I always have a mag no matter what gun I bring, and I don't have to dig through them before each range outing...:-)

I have nowhere nears that many, but keep 4-6 mags per bottom feeder. I just stick 'em in a heavy quart freezer bag and label the bag with the gun they go to.

The bags are stored in a plastic tool box that doesn't "look gunny."

Have designated range mags (1 or 2 mags per gun) and only take those to the range.
Leave the rest for when SHTF. (after you have tested them and they work)

use a scriber to write on your magazine.

Easy at this point, only 2 handguns and its easy enough to tell the difference between XD and 1911.
Future? Interchangeable mags. Several P220s, several 1911s, etc.
Otherwise, several containers.

Just one way of doing it... seems to work ok for us so far.

The indoor range I shoot at only lets you load 5 at a time, shoot, stop, and reload, and shoot again, so 1 mag per gun and a few boxes of ammo makes sense.

At other ranges, I'll preload all my mags and put them in big Ziploc freezer bags by caliber (.45, 9MM). Pretty hard to mix up 1911 and G30 mags in the same bag.

I carry the guns and ziplocs in a steel Craftsman toolbox with a padlock on it, since I'm usually driving a small SUV.

I use label maker or silver sharpie pens to mark my mags.

(around 31 Glock mags, 8 M&P mags, and 8 1911 mags)

Midwayusa tactical pistol case

I have one of these for each of my pistols & revolvers. Each case has 7 magazine pouches & two large storage compartments. I store these in my safe with the weapon & magazines inside. When I want to go to the range, I just grab the case & I'm off.

i store them in ziplocks and have them in plastic bins or ammo cans.. (rifle vs pistol)

other than that.. I only take 1-2 magazines to the range with me.. I use the time it takes to load them to think about what I need to work on and evaluate my target(s)..

Colored Sharpie's "Paint" that I picked up at Staples or Office Depot.
Be sure to get the Sharpie Paint series because regular Sharpie's don't work.

I have 4 colors, white, red, blue, yellow. I use a different color
for each type of magazine that may resemble another.
I print in large letters and numbers on the magazines.
G-23 in white for Glock 23
P-99 in red for Walther P99
etc.
I even number the magazines of any particular handgun.
G-23-1, G-23-2, G-23-3, etc
This makes it very easy to quickly spot any particular magazine,
that I want, in a range bag full of magazines.

Wipe the area with alcohol, before printing, to remove any oils.
Acetone or fingernail polish remover can be used to remove the printing
if you make a mistake or want to change something.

The printing eventually starts to wear off, so I freshen it up
from time to time.

But I am going to get a couple of those Midway tactical pistol cases for range work.
