New P226 issue

Sig p226 .40, purchased new this week, born in June, 2009.

First 150 rounds through, the slide failed to lock back a few times on the last round in the magazine. Slide catch lever looks ok...
I was cycling through the factory mag, as well as a few extra factory mags.

FYI before I shot it, I stripped and cleaned it. The gun even though it was bought new, had definitely been shot previously since the factory.

FYI I do not shoot with my thumbs forward, this happened with two different shooters, nothing touching the slide.

Anyone else experience this kind of slide failure while breaking in a P226 chambered in .40?

I'm not sure about the .40 but my P226 in 9mm failed to lock back a couple of times through the first 150-200 rounds or so. Round count is now around 750 and no problems since.

Probably the way you're gripping the gun. If you're using the thumbs forward method, you might consider having your upper thumb rest more on your support thumb rather than on the gun itself. Give that a try. I had the same issue with my first Sig and a fellow forum member (9mmepiphany) gave me some pointers and I've never had that problem with any guns since. Pretty much your hand might be preventing the slide catch from doing its job.

Aside from that.. just cycle/rack the hell out of your gun some more to break in the recoil spring.

I never had that problem with my P226-.40, even during break in.

As gorenut suggests you may want to check out whether your grip may be leading you to ride the slide release - sometimes people have that problem.

Well all I can think of is magazine issues since that is usually what causes this kinda thing.Make sure the magazine is fully pushed in an all the way.
Check magazine follower to see if it pushes slide stop up enough.

Might be the mags then. Stupid CA 10 round blockers make mags janky sometimes.

Slide glide and a hotter round did the trick for me

Remove the slide, put an empty mag in, and see how much contact you have between the mag follower and the slide catch lever. In normal operation the mag follower will push the slide catch up to stop the slide. If the contact is not enough it fail to catch every now and then.

In just casual reading on this site, and others, I've seen a disproportionate number of threads about the exact same thing.

It's the way you are gripping it.
Just keep your thumb lower, the slide release is very sensitive.
I wouldn't really do any mods on it, chances are you have big hands, so do I.

So remember, keep that thumb from the slide release while shooting.

Take the mags appart yet? If they're heavily greased, it could be slowing the follower... I saw this with a new .357 sig P226 and a friends red box 9mm, in both cases, cleaning the mag bodies and light oil helped.

It could be the mags - You mentioned cleaning the gun, but you didn't talk about cleaning the magazines...Sig's magazines usually come with some nasty sticky stuff in their magazines.

It could be the mag follower - With the upper removed, see if an empty mag pushes up the slide stop

It could be your grip - Try shooting it left handed

These are all the low cost ideas to try before getting into the more involved ones
