    A New .40

Most of my handguns are 9mm. I've decided to add a .40 cal to the family. I'm thinking about a Glock or a XD. Something compact/subcompact though. Any ideas/feedback on which is good/best? Advantages vs Disadvantages on either? What are the good/bad features? Thanks in advance!

If you go Glock, get the 35 (longer sight radius, better recoil management). If you insist on .40S&W, think about an M&P w/ an APEX DCAEK (recoil management similar or better than G35).

I like the XD a lot but the higher bore axis is not that great for recoil management. If you decide on the XD, get the XD40 Tactical (longer sight radius, longer slide will offset muzzle flip from high bore axis). Also get a Springer Precision or Powder River Precision trigger.

I enjoy my Glock 23 Compact. Great pistol, extremely reliable. The M&P is also a very nice shooter in .40S&W, and with the APEX parts it's even better.

I'm a bit confused. I thought that you couldn't buy M&P's unless you were LEO? Or was I told wrong?

                Glock

                Glock 23 FTW.

                Also consider the G35.

It would be cool if you could get a gen4 Glock 23.

Maybe a 1911 in .45ACP should be next instead.

Glock 20... Go big or Go home. Ok, Ok... Glock 29, since you wanted the compact. ;P

I have an XD .40 and am quite happy with it. It fit my hand better than the Glock does. I would say ignore all the advice above, not because it is bad... it isn't, but because it applies to those people and not you. Go into a shop that has a Glock, and XD, and an M&P. Pick it up, handle it, grip it, heft it. Does it feel good in your hand first off. Then see if you can rent one or borrow one from a friend and shoot it. Again, which one feels best. Then buy that one.
I like Glocks, they are well built guns. They just don't fell comfortable in my hands. I bought my XD before the M&Ps came out, so I havent bothered to pick one up and see how it feels. ;P

Don't forget to try out a CZ 75B! Sweetest ergonomics on that pistol all steel makes for a great range gun.

they're all great pistols, and i'm sure you'll do the smart thing and shoot all of them back to back at a range before you make your decision. Here is my quick $.02:

Have an XD, but I shoot glock better. Shot an M&P and it's pretty sweet also, but the XD felt slightly better in my hand (or maybe just more familiar, hence my preference). I would love to shoot an M&P with an apex trigger though. Can't go wrong with any of the three, pick the one that shoots best for you.

The CZ 75B is pretty sweet too. Haven't shot one but it's probably the most ergo pistol i've held.
