For a cheap 1911 you'd be WAY better off buying a Rock Island.

I was just gonna say, don't like plastic? If you're willing to go .45 instead of .40 (price difference for ammo is negligible) an RIA 1911 or even a Springfield GI or Mil Spec if you shop around.

I don't want to badmouth Taurus, but I own a model 608 and it hardly comes out of the safe anymore. Needs to go back to Taurus (again) for light hammer strikes. I sent it in once and they said it just needed to be cleaned correctly (implying that I was doing it wrong) so they did that and sent it back. Same problems. That and it was gone for 8 weeks. I'd sell it but my wife doesn't want me to, she loves it, mostly for the looks. It's a BIG gun.

If you get a 100 or 92 series Taurus you will be fine. They use Beretta machines to make their pistols.

But like someone said earlier, If you want a cheap 1911 get an RIA.

...I'd figure out how much HD vs. plinking you're going to be doing, because the price difference between 9mm and .40 is pretty darn big. I went w/ 9mm since I have a shotgun for HD, and I can shoot a good 50% more 9mm vs .40 for the same $$$...

I have a PT140 Millenium Pro, 3rd generation. As with any product, the early Milleniums had their share of problems but, with the early bugs worked out, it's now a reliable handgun.

For the .45ACP, I'd consider both the PT145 and the RIA 1911's. But the PT140 is a keeper for me.

My PT 1911 is an awesome gun. Everyone who shoots it loves it. Easts anything I feed it.

One of my first handguns was a Taurus.
A 1987 PT-99, never had issues.

My PT911 has always ran just fine with factory ammo. Even did a 4 day @ Front Sight with it and then my wife used it for a 2 day skill builder. The last photo gives you a size comparison next to my 92fs.

I love my Taurus model 66 revolver, has worked flawless for over 2000 rounds.....I have heard that the semi auto's are questionable(I can't prove that). Rock Island has had many great reviews and few complaints for their 1911's on this forum.

I have a Taurus 24/7 O.S.S. in. 40 s&w. It is a great gun and haven't had a single problem. Taurus gets a bad rap but have yet to personally see it.

+1 for the 24/7... I have .40 too (but it's a Pro DS), one of my favorite feeling guns - ergonomics cant be beat imo. It's a fine pistol + NRA hanggun of the year when it came out.

I did a boatload of research prior to purchase and yes Taurus has some negative feedback, but vast majority that own them have good things to say.

I will say however, their customer service is HORRIBLE!!! A bunch of pricks! There is a CA version and I wanted to know how it was different... maybe it was the fact that I live in CA (okay fair enough, it pisses me off too), but damn I'm a customer! The douchbaf actually asked me if I was DOJ I let him know I was an interested customer, but dont feel valued.

Anyway - 24/7 is a nice pistol - I never did find out how the CA version is different because I was able to get a DS.

I also have an M&P, which is a great choice too. I actually like them both more than my USP .40c

As for 1911... I have no idea, but from all that I researched the 24/7 is one of the few Taurus that has a lot of positive feedback.
