    Glock Modifications

Hey guys, I just DROSed my first Glock (26, 9mm subcompact), I have shot many Glocks before. I am planning on using this gun for home defense (crossing my fingers on the CCW) and target practice. Now I know out of the box they are reliable as all hell, one reason why I love them. I look at them as the modern day equivalent of the AK-47.

There are some things I would like to change on the Glock though, many people say that if you mess with a Glock it will reduce its reliability. I agree with that statement on some modifications, but on others I am questionable.

My questions involve the following items:

Lasermax Internal Laser System - I view lasers as a secondary sight, just in case. I purchased a subcompact so if I do not get this laser - I will not get any other because of bulk. I have heard bad reviews about the Lasermax, but I have also heard that LaserMax has slightly improved it making it just as reliable.

Trigger Job with 3.5lb Connector - I would really like to improve the trigger on my Glock with out reducing reliability. (How many pounds would you suggest for a self defense gun? Maybe 5-8lbs?)

Titanium Safety Plungers - To also improve the trigger and prevent corrosion.

Titanium Striker - To improve accuracy and prevent corrosion.

An Aluminum Trigger - I have shot a Glock with one and liked it very much.

    Jentra Plug
    - To keep dirt and such out of the mag well and make inserting a new magazine easier.

Night Sights - Do not know what kind - who makes the best?

Bar-Sto Barrel - Better accuracy and I like the way the stainless steel looks (video)

Will any of these products make the Glock less reliable? I know Bar-Sto is used by military and police. As for accuracy I know may of you will say, "get more range time" as the solution. I do try to get as much range time as I can but at the same time - I would like to have to most accurate pistol I can use to protect my self and family.

I plan on putting at least 500 rounds through the gun factory before modifying it at all.

    Thanks,
    Tony

Edit: This just came into mind - Titanium is a soft metal, thus wear faster possibly. NEED THE HELP OF THE CALGUN WISE MEN!

Stock Glocks are OK. Don't think too much.

Night sights are good to have.... I like Trijicon's (get the GREEN ones).

One think I love, is TruGrip... some grit tape on the handle... make it non-slippery even if you hands are all sweaty...

Everything else.... you can probably skip....
I put about 30k rounds thru my G19... in the past... maybe 2 years.... do that first before you think of any other mods.... ha ha ha

Don't do 3.5lb, if you want it to be a defense gun.

If you really want "a plug" you can get it....

like jicko said don't think of upgrades too soon, you just might like the gun stock and keep it as is. I did with my Glock

Aw man! now I am notorious for my sweaty hands! I have no problem holding onto a gun though. I tend to agree with you about the 3.5lb connector. I have shot many Glocks before, in .45 and 9mm. I just would like to custom tailor it to my liking without reducing the world famous Glock reliability.

          Yes to these two ...

          Trigger Job with 3.5lb Connector
          Night Sights (yellow/green)
Lasers ... no. They will not help you shoot what you can't see or hit what you can't aim at already. Get a surefire L4 instead and learn to shoot with it.

The titanium stuff and the aluminum trigger are not going to do anything for you. Titanium is hard and light so it might slightly increase the cycling rate of your gun. Not worth the money IMO. Get a flashlight instead.
The Glock barrel is great as is, so don't wast the money as you are not match shooting.
Make sure the jentra plug fits. The hole in my 26 has a flat landing and the plug has a round one, so it did not fit, nor have I found one that has. Must be a slightly new 26 design.

You think the 3.5lb Connector will not reduce reliability? As far as money is concerned - it's not. For a defense gun, I would like it to be the best that it can be - no matter what the cost. Already have an excellent small flashlight.

              Here is my .02 cents.

              Laser - No comment

Trigger Job - Since this is a carry gun you may just want to polish the trigger points and be done with it. http://www.alpharubicon.com/mrpoyz/glock/. What will really help you is learning to use the trigger reset. If you must have a 3.5 connector, I like the LWD or the Factory Glock 3.5 connector. A lot of people play with the springs ie recoil spring, striker spring and trigger spring to get the pull they are looking for. Do some research on this there is a lot of info out there.

Titanium Safety Plungers - Just polish the stock one.

Titanium Striker - Just polish the part that rids on the cross.

An Aluminum Trigger - If you like the smooth trigger Glock makes a factory one.

Jentra Plug - This is cool, I like these.

Night Sights - I liked the Metprolights, but the Heinie Slant Pro's are my current favorite and they make a NS version called the straight eights.

Bar-Sto Barrel - Not needed if shooting factory loaded Jacketed or Copper plate bullets. Some will say that the accuracy is questionable. I have an aftermarket LWD barrel only because I shoot moly coated bullets for USPSA matches. These aftermarket barrels have tighter chambers. The beauty of the Factory Glock barrels is that the chamber is loose for reliability.

I was thinking the same thing about the barrels - I just wanted the experts to chime in.

I like the Aluminum Trigger due to the fact that it is metal.

As far as the other things you have mentioned I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on. I will do my research, I just don't have the time to install a new springs go to the range pump out 500 rounds and see what happens.

Nor do I want a 'hair trigger' because I know the DA always jumps on that if there is ever a shooting.

I find a 3.5 lb connector makes for more accurate shot placement under any circumstance (i.e. you are more likely to mash the trigger under stress). Titanium will not make it better, just more expensive.

I was thinking Titanium would make it less reliable as well, and I was also reading about how Glock makes the best connectors - so it is best to stick with a factory connector instead of an aftermarket for defense.

I personally would not change the factory springs out for a defense weapon. I just mentioned it because some people do it and are successful.

My G22 which I would consider my HD gun that would come after the 870 is configured like this.

Stock G22 with the following mods:
                      -Factory Glock 3.5 connector
-Polished trigger parts - just followed the link above
                      -Heinie Slant Pro sights.
                      -Extended factorty mag release
                      -plug

Now for my competition G35 it is a different story.

                      -LWD barrel
                      -GlockWorx Comp III trigger kit
                      -TruGrip grip tape
                      -Heinie Slant pro rear sight
                      -Dawson FO front sight
                      -Dawson Ice magwell
                      -Standard Glock slide release
                      -THE Accessories Tungsten Guide rod
                      -15lb ISMI recoil spring

I have over 3000 rounds through this gun without a single failure.

                        - glock's extended mag release (the one came with G34/35)

                        - glock's extended slide release (the one came with G34/35)

+1 for what jiko said. really stay away from lazermax they replace the guide rod with a much weaker one that can break.

I personally have never seen any corrosion on any of the mentioned parts. On my glocks

I shoot about 300-500 rnds a week through my G35 and only clean it once a month or ever other month. I compete in and practice for USPSA.

My G23 sits in my closet "just in case" and it hasnt ever had any corrosion either. I only clean it about once a year tops after gssf. (the only time I ever use it).

The only part on any of my glocks that shows any signs of corrosion is the dawson sights on my G35 that become very very slightly oxidized. Nothing that doesnt come right off with a cleaning.

I know alot of people like the extended releases but I just find them clumbsly. I have slender fingers and I can operate the standard mag release and slide release very easily.

Glock makes a factory 3.5# Connector? Where can I get one?
