Thoughts on Mech Tech CCU for Glock?

Anybody used one of these? What are your thoughts/opinions? Reliable? Accurate?

They seem like great survival tools..... with a .22 conversion you would have everything you need: handgun and carbine in same caliber; .22 handgun for the smaller game...... 3 guns with half of the parts.

    It's no go in CA.
Pistol grip rifle with detachable magazine.
    Unless it is attachable magazine.
'Cuz big holes are easier to see.

You can correct my spelling and grammar error anytime.
I welcome it. How else would I learn.

I would love to have one for my 1911, but because of murky legalities they vary from will ship to CA, to will NEVER ship to CA, to second parties that may or may not ship to CA... They look very cool to me... I'd want to get one chambered in .460 Rowland

Ah - I think you may be in luck on this one.

As we know the Mech Tech by itself is not a gun. By itself it's not an AW but it becomes one once you slap on a conventional 1911 or Glock frame. So doing that in CA is not allowed. (Always wondered why they don't make one for a BHP by the way)

I was out of state last year and bought a used Mech Tech 1911 unit for $200.00. Excellent shape, no 1911 "frame" of course.

I have lots of complete 1911s. That is important, because if all you own is a Mech Tech and a 1911 complete frame (not a complete gun with slide) I suppose an assertion could be made the only "gun" that can be assembled using your inventory is an AW. You would have to counter that's not true - you're just building a 1911 or use the Mech Tech only out of state. Constructive possession doesn't apply to AW by feature.

The Mech Tech unit I bought had their conventional stock. Mech Tech offers accessories and one of them is a collapsible wire stocked tube. It's basically their conventional tube "receiver" with a sliding wire stock. Remove the barrel & bolt assembly from one tube, back it into the wire stock tube and you're done. Takes about 10 minutes, everything slides out in one piece.

They do mail to CA - I don't know about the whole unit, although I believe that would be a company position and not CA law - but pretty much everything else. When you speak with them they'll tell you "OK, we'll ship - don't assemble this in CA". I got the impression they are a small company in Montana and take the approach that you're an adult, you should know what you're doing & if you screw up it's not our fanny in a sling, it's yours.

I don't own a 1911 frame alone & I do not assemble the thing in CA. I'm out of the state often & use it in OR & NV. It works perfectly and is a great 50 yard or so plinker. With a 1 to 4X scope or holo sight it's a ball to shoot. Especially when you use a Para P14 and hi cap mags.

Given how easy it is to switch out a 1911 mag release, I've wondered why no one would offer a BB type mag release for use with the 1911 Mech Tech. The subject comes up often enough that I think it would be a big seller.

Thanks Fletcher..... I've handled the units but I haven't shot them.

I think I may pick one up for one of my G20's.... I like the idea of a 10mm carbine.... those DT 200 and 230 gr. Beartooth bullets should do some damage in one of the Mech Tech units!

I do think the BB would be a good thing for these..... I'm not going to use one as CA law no longer applies to me, but for the remaining POW's it's a great idea.

My only gripe regarding the Mech Tech is that damn "Thwaaang" sound the thing makes during recoil. The gun is pure blowback and the bolt wacks up against a thick rubber recoil stop @ the back of the tube. On their regular unit, which has a metal stripping type stock frame with no center - the noise is quite pronounced. On the collapsible it is less. Mech Tech sells plastic stock inserts that cut down the noise on their conventional stock.

Also, if you use a scope get one with a longer than average eye relief. Not an EER, but something like the older Weavers is great. Keeps you from crawling up the stock & getting your nose tweaked during the mild recoil.

If you can find a proper functioning 50 round drum mag for whatever gun you get that makes for quite a fun carbine.

Thanks for the info..... I don't think they make a drum mag for a G20... not yet anyway. I think I'm limited to 15 rounds unless I can run down one of those Scherer 30 round sticks I hear are out there somewhere.

My main purpose for this would be a survival weapon. I like the fact that a .22 conversion upper, a CCU, and the base handgun would provide me with 10mm power in handgun and carbine, and .22 efficiency in the handgun. I could even add a .40 conversion barrel to the mix and add a more common caliber...... 40 would probably function in the carbine upper anyway.

                .22 handgun
                10mm handgun
                .40 handgun
                10mm carbine

Covers power (probably shoot those 200 gr DT loads out of the carbine at 1800-2000 fps or so) and common ammo. I could carry the CCU and .22 upper in a backpack along with several boxes of 10mm and a brick of .22...... that should cover the defense/hunting aspect. If I need to locate and secure ammo beyond that .40 and .22 should be no problem.

                  Dood, seriously....

Do you know how easy it would be to make a mag lock for a 1911 or a Glock?

Both would use a trimmed down mag release. Easy as pie.

I figured that for the 1911 - especially one off a Para since they're made of plastic. The problem is, just grinding it flush with the frame is I think taking a bit of a chance. It could still be activated by hand. You'd have to go below the frame. The problem with that is that the distance the mag release must travel to disengage from the mag will push the shortened mag release button below the left inside edge of the frame, and the mag release won't return to it's correct "rest" position. At least that's how it appears on the 1911s I have & checked.

I do think if you worked carefully and used a tool that depressed the shortened mag release just right it would work. I could see someone tinkering around & getting it to work.

Now if the area around the mag release button were raised - or if the mag release were modified so that you had a bullet button inside the mag release it would work fine. I'd bet someone could make them & sell for under $20.00.

so with a bullet button on a glock then this would (in theory, ymmv) be legal in cali? even though it would now be a less than "legal length" rifle?

With the fixed stock I believe it's well over the 30" minimum, the collapsible is not & could not be used. Also, some models come with what could be considered a flash suppressor so you'd have to go naked barrel.

Sorry Kestrel..... I had a thread going in the off-topic forum a week or two ago about our pending move.....

We are currently in CA, but as of Monday morning around 10am when we cross the line into Nevada we will no longer be residents of the PRK. By Tuesday afternoon we should be arriving at our new house in Gillette, Wyoming. Man, it will sure feel good to live up there again! I just can't deal with this place anymore....... between the taxes, expensive living, regulations, gun-control, political slant in schools etc. it was an easy decision.

What a great change of scenery - I was in the area a few months ago and more unlike CA the place could not be - Black Hills & the river and a normal political & family environment. Doesn't hurt that one of your Senators is a former Mayor - best of luck to you.
