I just ordered a P220R3 Carry .45 ACP to add to my CCW license. Currently on the license, I have a Colt Combat Commander .45ACP, Sig P239 9mm, and a Kahr PM9 9mm. The P220 would replace the Colt. (3 handguns is the max allowed, right ?) It's a little late to be second guessing my decision, but for you P220 owners out there - how practical is this weapon as a concealed carry? On the forums, some say it's too big, & some say it's perfect. If you own a Sig P220, please tell me I didn't just waste $800 ! Does it conceal well ?

Second Guessing my Sig P220 Carry purchase

I don't have the gun and I don't carry generally. However, I'm going to say this is a personal opinion and based a lot on the clothing you wear and your body type. Different people can conceal different guns. You really won't know until you carry it around for a while and see what feels right or doesn't.OCSD Approved CCW Instructor

Isn't the 220 Carry a compact (shorter slide)? That being say... a CHP buddy of mine carries a 220 all day long without issue. But he's a pretty big dude (6'1" 210)... he carries IWB, conceal good under sweat shirt.Comment

First, there is no three-gun limit, so you can simply add your new pistol. Second, I think the P220 Carry will be larger but possibly lighter than your Colt Commander.Matthew D. Van Norman

Sacramento County is three gun limit by Sheriff''s policy.
I do carry a Glock 17 when I can, but most of the time I'm limited to carrying my G26 due to office dress limitations and the desire not to print at all.Slow justice is no justice.
I was shooting a Glock when shooting a Glock wasn't cool.Comment

The full sized 220 is the same profile/size as the Commander...but the 220 is thicker across the slide.
I've carry my full size 220 without any problem on a good belt (Wilderness Instructor) and a good holster (Comp-Tac Settable Cant Paddle)...because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's TaleComment

The three-gun limit is unlawful. Send a PM to Brandon Combs (Wildhawker) of CGF about it.Matthew D. Van Norman

I have a couple of SIG 220's. While one is on my CCW it is too big for concealment on my body, 5'-9", 175 lbs. I put it on my carry list (retired LEO) mainly for travel in my vehicle in other states. If it were on a holster outside of your pants it would be just too big for me, and especially during lighter clothes seasons.
Winter gun for me is a SA Ultra Compact .45
Spring / Summer is S&W Model 60 3" .357, S&W 642 hammerless .38.
While the SA and smaller 'J' frames are great, in a firefight they are just to get me to my car where I have my P220. I carried those 220's for many years as LEO and I am a F'ing surgeon with them. The people of the United States are the rightful masters of both Congress and the Courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.

I have a Sig 220 carry listed on my permit. Im not a big guy around the waist so I carry it in a Gaclo shoulder holster during the colder months...very comfortable. But I do have smaller pistols listed for iwb and better concealment, but in the end I just like to have the option.Comment

OP:
I had a Sig P245, which is basically the predecessor to the P220 Carry. It was okay to carry. It's not going to be like carrying your Kahr but in a good OWB holster it will be fine. I only ever carried it OWB. I found it a bit thick for IWB but it can work that way. The guy I sold it to carries it IWB. Neither one of us are what you'd consider big guys. Like others have stated, the proper belt/holster combination is paramount.
I think the other question is whether you want to substitute the P220 for a 1911. Both are great and two of my favorite handguns. (I'm putting aside the possibility of having more than one gun on your CCW.) That's a tough choice and only you can make it.Last edited by Heiko; 04-30-2011, 1:39 PM.Comment

I have a sig220 carry, I am 5'8" and 160 soaking wet. It is my ONLY CCW. I carry rain or shine, 365 days a year, I dont wear baggy pants, and I dont wear baggy shirts. Sometimes its just levis, a white tshirt and my 220, and I have NO problems concealing it. Get a Milt sparks vm2 with the tuckable clips, and on me the gun just disapears. Dont listen to nay sayers, on the gun, dont regret it, they are great guns, and shoot like sobs. Since you have other sigs, I am sure you are aware, they do require a 300-500 rd break in (my carry did anyway). But after that, its smoother than the inside of a playmates thighs.
The only thing I would be concerned about as mentioned is going from a 1911, to the 220 if it is dao or da/sa. Controls are different, no safeties etc on the 220.
Good luck on your purchase, you WILL be happy. Most important thing, you are buying a $800 gun, get a GOOD ccw holster for it. Dont skimp on it, I had a comptac infidel, that I used to use, it was horrid uncomfortable, would poke me in the side. When I first put on the vm2, I got a hard on how good it felt. Night and day, but for +$100 on the vm2, I would say their should be.Comment

Your point is similar to what I was going to say, but I have a more positive twist.
You other guns are DAO or DA/SA so it makes a lot of sense going to the P220. The 1911 was the odd duck with the safety. You are simplifying and reducing the chance of user error.
Not having put the side by side, how different is the size of the 220 carry and 239?Comment
