May have messed up my 1911 when disassembling

So I was just taking it down to learn how. I wanted to take the grip safety off and study it. I had a few issues with putting it back together cause the springs are still so stiff. When I finally got it all together again. I did a function test. The safeties and everything performed as they were meant to. but when I manually cock the hammer back I get one click really quickly and the hammer will stay there, kinda at a quarter cocked position. Then it clicks again and stays at what seems to be half cocked. Then all the way down it gets fully cocked.

When I first got the gun I don't remember there being three clicks in order to fully cock it. Is there and I'm just not remembering it or did I mess with something when it was disassembled? Whatever it is I'm sure it can be fixed easily by me and if not then by a gunsmith. Thanks in advance.

It's possible the three fingerd leaf spring is not installed correctly.
For reassembly, I put it in first, the tab at the bottom of the spring into the notch first, then slide up the mainspring housing a little to hold the spring in place.

That's exactly how I did it but I'm getting the three clicks. Gun functions but it's weird. When I have time tomorrow I may take it apart and then put it back together again.

Anyone know why in that video his mainspring housing just slides in when mine is tense and springy. Really hard to get it back in place and hold it to place the pin in. Tough stuff.

Not sure about the details of what you've done, or not, and this may be of no help. But there is a point in this full tear-down where the guy makes specific mention as to the "normal" procedure for reassembling the grip safety and mainspring on a 1911. It's Wilson, so obviously different from your Mil Spec, but it's still the same flavor.

What type (brand/model) of 1911 is it? If it is a Springfield Armory this may be totally normal. The SA1911's have a saftey stop on the hammer and have a half cock position (3 positions total - Saftey Stop, 1/2 cock, and Full cock).

It's a Mil Spec so then that may be it. It's just one of those things where I'm paranoid after reassembly and can't remember what was normal.

I'd say it's the leaf spring. Check out the YouTube on rebuilding.

Sounds normal to me...I have several SA 1911s that operate this way.

Yeah, my SA Loaded does the same thing. It is normal. It is to prevent a misfire when there is a round in the chamber and your finger slipped trying to cock the hammer. I just find it funny at 1/4 cock, I can pull the trigger to release the hammer, but not at 1/2 cock. Older models of SA 1911 don't have the 1/4 cock according to some at m1911.
