    "Smart" Handguns..

I was watching a show on History Ch Intl on the history of semi auto pistols and at the end Colt mentioned a prototype handgun which has a transmitter in the mag and you would wear a wristband or ring type transmitter.

The thought was that with the instances of Beretta 92 issued to police and/or someone retrieving your firearm from you the firearm wouldn't function because the transmitter in the mag would be in front the transmitter on your person. This is a technology I can see getting perfected or possibly issued within the next possibly 10 years.

Just curious on some of your inputs on this any faults/errors etc.. It was already admitted that some waves like a VCR and garage opener and interfere with the signal etc but it's a very interesting concept to me. Just thought I would throw out some foreign bait and see what other people think about this possible new technology.

A computer is the last thing I'd want in my firearm...

I agree with Toast...and that idea/technology?....it never went anywhere...it enables faulty officer safety skills among other things...

just one more needless safety to overcomplicate things. The only way someone is taking my weapon from me is if im already dead, so i dont care if the gun will fire or not

Umm, not sure I'd use the word 'smart' to describe these. I don't see how adding extra parts that can malfunction and an extra step to making your firearm ready to fire (unless you never take that ring off) is smart. Not to mention that you don't control the firmware in that thing, and you have no way of knowing who can disable your firearm remotely.

Thats all fine until your out of town and your girlfriend/old lady/whatever needs to shoot the burglar. Making the gun is useless it in the owners hands.

There's also this amazing technology called a "booger hook". Basically, if you keep it off the "bang switch" the gun will not fire.

There has also been some pistols connected to a ring that will only function when worn by the shooter. Dont think it ever took off in any market.

But what if you need to shoot through yourself to get the bad guy? Your hosed, that's what!

Bad idea, imo more things to go wrong.

Well, why did he not shoot the burglar? Possible interference from the wi-fi, garage door opener, cordless phone, etc. services will be held next week...

No thanks. I'll use trigger discipline and safe practices.

I'm all for these devices! they should be mounted to every police weapon!

that way I can get a little belt box the size of a pager which will jam them and I won't have to worry about police shooting me

I of course would only carry 'vintage' firearms

I would rather see a built in camera that takes a still picture the instant the trigger is pulled, we have the technology to implant them into the gun with virtually no change in the exterior dimensions in most pistols. This way there is no argument as to what the threat was at the time of the shooting, whether it be a little puppy coming in at full speed for a lick attack, or a guy pointing a water nozzle like a gun.

The above idea is meant for law enforcement only, and it would have to be a requirement to keep the battery charged and in working order.
