    Looking for a new handgun

    Hey Guys,
I bought a MKIII 22/45 5 1/2BBL a while back and now I'm looking for a second handgun with a little punch. I'm used to hunting with rifles so something with low-mid recoil and heavy is preferred. I shot a glock 9mm a while back but I'm not a fan of the plastic light-weight feel of the gun. I also shot a M&P .40 (thinking it was a S&W) this was a bit better but it seems too slide heavy, maybe that's just me not being used to handguns. I've done some hunting with a Redhawk .44 with a 7 1/2 barrel and it was a great gun to hunt with but I don't think I want a revolver for range play. I'm going to be getting a 1911 around thanksgiving for pretty much free (w00t!) and I want to be able to shoot the damn thing. what would you guys suggest be my next gun?

    Thanks,
    E

just go rent as many guns (non polymer) as possible. The handgun is for you so you are the best judge for what you'll like. People here can recommend this & that but if you don't like the way it feels in your hand, it is no good.

    Some common brands to consider
    Beretta
    Sig Sauer
    CZ
    Springfield Armory (1911 style)
    Colt (1911 style)
    Para Ordnance(1911 style)
    Smithies (3rd gen & 1911 style)

Good luck & keep us posted on your decision & remember to post pix.

      Maybe a 9mm?

Given the cost of ammo these days, maybe a 9mm gun would make sense for range use and practice, since that caliber ammo is probably the least expensive of the major calibers. Generally a 9mm has less recoil as well, which makes it more pleasant for lots of shooting.

You said you didn't like the feel of polymer in the Glock, so how about something with an aluminum or steel frame? Sig is one of the best quality brands in the market, and makes several different models in 9mm. I have a Sig P226 in 9mm and it is a wonderful gun to shoot. The smaller models P239, P228 and P229 are also very good.

The Ruger P-89, its inexpensive and will shoot anything without a hicup, plus it has some weight to it, so it does'nt feel like a toy.

Thanks WokMaster1, I'm heading out to the range this weekend I know they have an assortment but I'll have to look closer at what they have.

Thanks Miltiades, I think the P226 might be a bit on the light side for what I'm looking for but I'll see if I can get some time on one at the range.

After looking around at the Makes suggested this is what I came up with:
          Make Model Weight Barrel
          Beretta M9A1 35.3 4.9
          Sig P226 34.0 /w mag 4.4
          CZ 75 SP-01 41.6 4.7
          Para Ordnance CTX189B 37.5 5

The Para looks sweet but man the price is up there. The Beretta and CZ both look like a good fit and around 30-40% less. Time to hit the range.

          Thanks again,
          E
