Yes they will work as long as you dont plan on swapping the mag release to the right on the Gen4

If your older mags do not have the ambi notch (small rectangle notch) on the front of them, then they will not work unless you move/modify the magazine catch spring over to one side.

It's just like what you need to do on the SF model Glocks when you run the non-ambi mags. I've posted a how-to awhile back, and I there are other threads on here that went into doing it (just use a long, small flat-head screwdriver and you can do it in a few seconds).

They will work 100% without a problem

I run a bunch of 1988 Glock Magazines in my newer GLOCKS and they fit perfectly.

The only problem is if switch the mag release button to the right side of the frame (on the GEN 4) there is NO NOTCH on the older mags for that.

HOWEVER...you are perfectly legal to change out the mag TUBE to the new style (rebuild your old mag) that has the double notch if you desire.

It is ok to rebuild your prebans with new parts; including ALL THE PARTS.

Not trying to high jack Stan's post..but are the gen 4's all that good..other than the grip straps to adjust your grip..is the duel recoil spring working as designed?

Reason I ask is a local FFL who deals with a lot of PD/LEO weapons ..made a comment that they aren't that good and having problems.

          Thank you,

Something is having a lot of problems is a pretty cleaver way to blow someone off.

If someone responds with there are a ton of problems, ask what problems are. No one will ever know what problems there are, if any.

There were some issues with 9mm Gen4s when they first came out. Basically, the concern was that they were oversprung, and some folks were seeing malfunctions because of it. My understanding is that there have been revisions of the springs... search on "0-4-1 recoil spring glock 19" for example. That should get you more reading material. I would hope that Glock has worked through the issues by now, but I haven't been following close enough to say for certain.

                  Glock magazines....

Due to minor variances, there are currently about nine generations of Glock magazines.
Some people and vendors simplfy those nine down to four.

                  Gen1 = Non-Full Metal Lined (NFML)
Gen2 = Full Metal Lined (FML)
Gen3 = FML with ambi-mag release cut (front of mag)
Gen4 = FML with ambi-mag release cut & reversable mag release cut (right side of mag)

What magazine release is on the Glock will determine which generation of Glock magazines will work in it.

Glocks with the standard magazine release will use all generations of Glock magazines.

Glocks with the ambi-magazine release will only use the Gen3 & Gen4 Glock magazines.

Glocks with the reversable magazine release set up on the standard side will use all generations of Glock magazines.

Glocks with the reversable magazine release set p on the non-standard side will only use the Gen4 Glock magazines.

                    Gen4 reliability...

There was problems with the Glock 17Gen4 and 19Gen4. Had to do with the new recoil spring system. Glock corrected the issue and the problem seems to have disspiated.

There have been no reported problems with the .40S&W, .357SIG and .45GAP Gen4 Glocks.

There's a LEO on M4C.net that is doing a T&E eval on a Glock 22Gen4, that has 2400 rounds through it with no stoppages and has yet to be cleaned since first acquiring the Glock.

The question is.. where are you going to get the gen 4 in California?

Unless you're LEO you definitely can purchase a Gen 4 or through a PPT. GL

I believe you meant to say:
