New to CA, how does private party trans work?

I am new to CA and am selling a handgun. After reading various things on the web, i think this is the process, right?

1- use FFl
2- both parties meet at FFL and fill out forms
3- payment is collected by seller
4- gun is left with FFL
5- buyer comes back after wait period and background check to get handgun

Is this right? Does the seller only need to be present at the start of the process and collects the $ at that time?

Yes it is that simple. But you also need the proper paper work. It just gets messy when the FFL throws in extras like a longer wait, more cost, scheduled times and a very rude attitude.

Yes, you've pretty much got it there. Be advised though, if you're attempting to sell an off-roster handgun to another CA resident, you may be required to show CA ID in order to make the sale.

Ffl is not allowed to charge more than $35 for ppt if I remember correctly. Just remember to take your id with you. If they are standard capacity mags, does he have to break them apart?? I think yes.

Yep, that's the logistics of the PPT process. So now, which off-roster pistol do you have 4-sale?

You pretty much have it, except you forgot about paying the FFL their fee. 25$ for DROS, and 10$ to them. Capped by statute for PPTs.

If it's not a proper PPT, which is face to face CA residents, then it's an "FFL transfer" which is 25$ for DROS + X$, where X is the number they pull out of their behind.

Most of which is a misdemeanor on the part of the FFL if they do it.

Face to face transfer between california residents is capped at a total of 35$ in fees to the FFL. This is a PPT. They also can NOT schedule times when PPTs are allowed. Being paranoid about the 10 24 hour periods thing is fairly consistent, you aren't to receive your firearm until 240 hours have passed. Some go overboard and make you wait the extra day.

Unfortunately, rudeness isn't uncommon, and isn't against the law... yet.
