    RIA CS Range Report

Went to the range today. New grips feel great, only thing I've done since I got the CS home is disasemble, clean oil reasemble and change out to the the Stingray grips I made.

The good; Trigger feels nice and clean, release is crisp. Grip safety, thumb safety work and feel good. Thumb safety is easy to find. Hammer cocking feels good, the skeletonized hammer with serations is a plus.

The bad: Trigger pull is real long. The sights are not very functional in any type of low light. So far I have tried two diff type of FMJ ball ammo and the gun failed to return to battery several times with both. Ammo was balzer and shooting range reloads. I bought range reloaded SWCs and the CS ate them up with out a hickup. I will have to invest in a few JHP to test so I can pick a reliable SD round.

All in all I'm happy with it, it hits where I aim it (at 7 yrds) looks good to my eye and fits well in my hands. A few more boxes of break in ammo and I think I'll have this one dialed in.

From what I have read, and I am not a 1911 expert, you should expect those jams to go away after the breakin period. Most 1911s have a 500 round breakin period.

I've also read that in order to be reliable with non-ball ammo Rock Islands need some polishing to various surface areas including the throat of the barrel. Some Flitz polish, a rag, an online tutorial, and a small amount of elbow greese should be all that you need.

I bought my Kimber used. So it was already broken in.

RIAs need about a 400 round break-in and they like to run wet. needing to polish the feed ramp is not uncommon.

after the first 400 rounds my RIA 1911 tactical ate any kind of ammo i could feed it. the feedramp will get polished from feeding the FMJ rounds.

I have the full size Tactical. It choked on SWC & JHP the first few hundred rounds. Never any problem at all with round nose ammo.

The factory ACT mags are iffy. Some have no problem and some are... well... less than 100%. Mine never functioned correctly. The final straw was after a first round jam the mag stuck in the well, then proceeded to dump it's guts & 7 rounds of ammo on the line. .
Wilson Combat, MecGar and Checkmate mags (all 7 rounders) all work fine.
