My SW1911PD keeps jamming!!

I have put 400 rounds through it and the first time I shot it I had 7-8 jams out of 100 rounds.

All subsequent range trips have had a jam every 2nd or 3rd mag and its usually the first round getting chambered or the last round in the mag

I have tried both Federal and WWB and had the same results with both.


Any suggestions? Am I going to have to send it back to S&W?

Have you tried different mags?

Have you tried field stripping and putting back together? It may not completely diagnose the issue but may lead you in the right direction.

I field strip it and clean it after every outing, still happens

I'd try different mags first

With S&W's extractor design, tension shouldn't be a problem

I'd try some different mags. Are you using factory ammo or reloads? Cast or jacketed? Is that a raised burr around the firing pin hole? I would say that 400 rounds is plenty of break in time. And the next thing to check would be the extractor. It may have a sharp edge or burr where it contacts the case rim or groove. Extractors can cause plenty of problems in autos of any caliber.

My brother's new S&W 1911 jammed once or twice a mag the first time he shot it. After reading a bit online, one suggestion, to buff the chamber with 0000 steelwool wrapped around a dowel or old chamber brush, caught his attention. This was not to remove metal- but to remove anything in the chamber like sticky preserving grease. As his gun was jamming with the round about half way chambered it appeared the chamber was a bit to 'grabby' so he tried it. The second time out with it, it jammed only once in 200 rounds, and the third time out, no issues. His Smith is really tightly fitted and very accurate, and now is feeding everything just fine- with the mags it came with.

Is that a raised burr around the firing pin hole?

Run your finger nail around the firing pin hole area and check for snags.....It doesn't take much of a raised burr around the firing pin hole to aggravate the problem.
Extractor too tight.
Feed ramp area.
Mag.

Check all of the above.

Get new mags. Act Mags are really good

S&Ws already come with Act-Mags

Try a McCormick PowerMag...or even a Metalform one (with the round top follower)

Did you buy it used? The recoil spring may be weak. What kind of rounds are you shooting?

First & last round jams are almost always the mags. If it's used the springs may just be weak.

Could also be the extractor.

Get new mags. Act Mags are really good

Some are, some aren't. The ACT that came with my RIA is an excellent paperweight. I retired it when it stuck in the well & then dumped it's guts and 7 rounds of ammo on the line...
