Hope you guys don't mind if I bombard with questions, my first handgun and I'm pretty lost..

My P226 9mm gets out of jail in 7 days.

• What is the difference between a 92FS slide and the P226 slide?
  
  When I was using a 92FS, after a magazine was shot empty, the slide remained locked back and all I needed to do was depress the slide release with one hand and it would snap forward. Before buying the P226, to release the slide, I was instructed to use two hands by the staff. To depress the slide stop, then using my secondary hand, slingshot it back and let it slide forward. Are these two different slide designs? Or was I using the 92FS incorrectly?

The Sig design has a slide stop as you've found. It is placed a bit farther back than on many other designs and some people who are used to the slide stop farther forward sometimes have trouble finding it in drill. I did at first. The staff telling you to slingshot the slide on a reload is pretty much doctrine in training these days, although if you have rounds in the mag holding down the slide stop is not necessary.

Factory Sig mags are, quite often, made by Mec-Gar. All of the Sig marked OEM mags I have for my P226 and P239 were made by Mec-Gar. They work just fine, never a hiccup.

I've found that P226s will digest any FMJ you want to feed them. As far as which might give best accuracy in your gun, you'll have to shoot it some and see for yourself.

In HP rounds, I've used a lot of Winchester Ranger T in 9 and .40 through Sigs. Works very well.

Grips.... Google is your friend. Search term < Sig Custom Grips >. Personally I like the Hogue wood offerings. You can find aluminum, faux ivory, all kinds. If you want to get really spendy there are Nill grips. Very nice and very classy, just really expensive.

The store employees always recomend using 2 hands. Its still there property. When you get it home, you can use your feet with only 3 toes if you want.

I only do it when Im at the range inserting another mag so the first round will chamber properly. You can be gentle when doing it without ammo. Nothing to worry about the ammo seating right.

Couple things I recall from owning a 226 a while ago.

I used winchester white box for FMJ and it worked very well. No jams and very accurate.

For some reason it's easier to "ride the slide release" on the 226 more that other guns. Make sure you are gripping the gun correctly.
Great gun. No particular reason for selling it, other than somebody gave me a lot of money for it.

Mec Gar is the OEM supplier to SIG Sauer, so they'll work great

I've got a Pachymer grip on mine. A little more expensive than Hogue, but it feels better in my palm. The "palm swell" is molded very nicely

Congrats! I want a 226 in 9mm also. I have a 229R in .40 and a 239 in 9mm and love them. A 220 would be awesome too

In my experience I've found that, while Mec-gar makes mags for SIG, the ones they market under their own label are to a different spec than the factory OEM specs. I have found them slightly less reliable than factory mags including factory Mec-gar mags. Same with Mec-gar Beretta 92FS mags.

I've noticed they don't always lock the slide back after the last shot, especially the 17-rd. mags. I bought a bunch of hi-cap Mec-gar brand P226 and 92FS mags back in the day before the ban, both 15 and 17-rd. mags. Seems to me the mag springs were not strong enough to reliably push up the slide release lever. So those are relegated to practice use only. I suppose I could try replacing the mag springs with heavier ones...

Otoh, I've had no problems with Mec-gar 10-rd. mags for Para Ord P-14's, so maybe they've fixed the problem in the 10-rdrs.

For SD use, I'd stick with factory mags.

I have a German P226. Late 90's gun. Works great . Use it off duty sometimes.

MECGAR DOES MAKE magazines for sig.

I have several that are marked MECGAR and SIG SAUER.
Great gun! I use mine with Federal JHP's.

I have no perceived difference between factory or mecgar mags. I love my Hogue rubber finger grips on my Sig. For me it makes single hand shooting highly accurate. For the slide release, I'm able to release the slide with my right thumb only. They showed me in the shop the two handed method, but I prefer using only one hand. You will sort all of this out after your third magazine on your first range trip.

I have a 226 Navy and the factory 10rd mags are TIGHT. It takes quite a bit of effort to get the 10th rd in. The factory full cap mags are much better but for 10 rounders, I prefer the Mec-Gar aftermarket.

As for ammo, it eats everything FMJ or JHP that I have thrown at it: Federal, WWB, UMC, Hornady Critical defense, Remington Goldens, CCI JHP +P, it eats it all.

As for the slide, on a reload with a fresh mag, pressing the slide release only will chamber a round just fine. On an empty mag you usually have to press the mag catch and slingshot it to overcome the magazine slide lock activation notch on the empty mag.

A couple of things: Get any cosmo off of it and make sure you lube it before the first firing. Any gun oil will work. (I actually prefer Lubriplate Lithium grease, it doesn't spray on the first couple rounds, sticks in place and keeps on lubricating long after oils would have run out. I use it on the slide rails mostly. You may experience the slide failing to come back into battery fully a couple times as the gun is breaking in but it usually goes away after 100rds or so.

Does anyone use EWL Slip 2000 on their Sig Sauer? And how has that been working for you? I don't know whether I should just use EWL or get something that's recommended for Sigs.

I use Mil Comm on the rails and CLP everywhere else on my P226R and SP2022. Both guns have worked beautifully with no jams in either (about 7K rds combined). I haven't heard anything bad about EWL so if that's what you have now I'm sure it'll work fine.

On the Beretta it's designed to be a slide release, or easy one handed to release the slide every time that's why I love mine. For the Sig 226 technically it's a slide stop basically the same thing, but I've noticed some from the factory are super tight that until you break it in you will have to sling shot it to get the slide to release. On other NIB ones I've handled the slide release was just perfect out of the box, not as smooth as the Beretta because it's much smaller but you could release it with one hand with ease. That's why I hate Sigs their consistency is all over the place why can't they make them all the same?

Factory and Mec Gar are the same, just different markings.

FMJ I notice it will eat most anything I usually prefer American Eagle/Federal
HP Speer Gold Dots or Federal HST if you can find it.

Grips I actually like the factory rubber.
