    your Achilles' heel

i have multiple handguns and i shoot all of them fairly well. all but one . for the life of me i shoot 1911s like crap. the worst part is that i love the 1911 platform. it's gotten to the point where i set all my other guns on the back burner until i get over this slump. thankfully i handload to i'm able to shoot .45s all day long. i've shot about 2k rounds in the last 2 weeks and i'm still pushing low on my shot placement.

fundamentally speaking, i shouldn't have this problem because the fundamentals of shooting are the same regardless of platform. i have other .45s (not 1911) and i shoot those well. i just have to keep practicing with the 1911 but i feel i shouldn't have this issue.

i was just wondering if any of you that have multiple handguns have an "achilles' heal" similar to mine.

Define crap. Also, dry-fire can be just as effective for training as live rounds. Just have to do it right. Perfect practice makes perfect.

The two autopistols I shoot are 1911's and Glocks. I started with a Colt XSE......I could shoot hand spread groups by my third trip to the range at 10 yards. My third time EVER having shot a pistol. I took to 1911's like a duck to water.

GLOCKS however......let's just say it was pretty ugly for a while. With a lot of practice both at the range and with dry firing, I've managed to become a good shot with any full size or compact Glock.

      Practice makes perfect.

I think most people have at least one type of gun that, for whatever reason(ergonomics, trigger, ect) they just cant shoot well.

For me, it's glocks. at 10 yards with my 1911, ruger mkIII or GP100 I can get a 2-3 inch group shooting quickly(1 shot per second) without trying that hard. With all the glocks I have shot, even when I take my time for each shot, I am lucky to get a 6 inch group at 10 yards. Between the ergonomics of the grip and the trigger I just cant get used to them.

I'm glad it's not just me. I shot my new 1911 and was embarrassed at what my target looked like.

            Not enough ammo.
The bullets with my name on it I'm not worried about, it's the "To whom it may concern" ones I'm worried about.

Oops. Hit the submit button too soon. I'm ok with 4" groups for my first run. Problem is, those 4" groups were about 3" below my point if aim. I think I need to work on my trigger pull.

The first 1911 I shot was a Les Baer, I couldn't believe on the first try the whole mag 3" group center ring standing at around 10 yrds or so. what a sweet feeling and beautiful trigger, I had to buy one.

I had an issue over the last year that took me a while to shake. I got used to shooting Single Action Pistols (Sigs, 1911's, CZ's) and I was unable to shoot anything else effectively. In the last month or so I finally discovered what the problem was. Since my sight picture, stance, trigger control, and breathing seemed to be good, there was only one thing left it could be. I concluded that it was my grip. For some reason, whenever I shoot a DA/SA. DAO, or a DAK I would deathgrip the gun. Now I kind of hold the gun a little more loosely in my right hand and everything is gravy.

It's all about what you're used to. My main handgun of choice is my Glock 34 so when I grab a 1911, I can't shoot it for ****.

If you have a chronic issue (shooting low in your case), firing more rounds is not going to help, it'll only make the issue permanent. Worse, you may start to compensate and simply "aim higher" and that will create a plethora of other issues later on.

I'm not going to pretend I have any clue to diagnose your issue over the internet. My suggestion is to spend 30 minutes with an instructor you trust, my guess is they'll have you sorted out in 5.. . .. then those next 2000 rounds will be right on target.

For the life of me, I couldn't ever shoot any of the P226s I've owned (3 - 9mm, 40sw, 357sig) as well as my other guns. The gun just doesn't want to agree with me for whatever reason, which is strange because I shoot the SP2022 very well. Eventually gave up on all my P226s, couldn't justify having such expensive guns that I didn't enjoy shooting. I have my core gun for HD, everything else is hobby.

I struggle with Glocks. And I am not a Glock hater either - I want to like it, simple, easy to maintain, consistent trigger pull, and reliable. Problem is the grip angle messes with me, and I just don't shoot it well.

The Sig 226..is like man and machine in perfect harmony - well for me that is.
