Pistol Shooting / Self Defense Classes

A friend of my just recently got hooked on shooting. I've taken him to range a few times, but he wants to do a class where they cover basic safety and proper shooting techniques (aim, stance, grip, etc.) and other defense techniques (maybe clearing a room, etc.).

He doesn't have his own pistol yet so class that has guns for rent is important. I guess worse case would be that he can borrow my one of mine.

Does any one know of a good class in southern California??

The one by Turners does not seem too comprehensive or as exciting: http://www.turners.com/engage/basichandgun.html

    Any experience with this one:
Develop your skills with handguns, rifles and shotguns, from basic to advanced in Southern California. Highly credentialed instructor Greg Block emphasizes civilian self-defense situations. Be Safe, Be Confident, Get Trained!

    Thanks.

I have taken a few of Greg's classes. I think they were really good, but I have not taken any others to compare with. I would/will take them again. I think he posts a lot on www.californiaccw.org, if you have any questions.

      Update ur location please....

Suggesting something to you that is down here in San Diego(weekly classes, last 8 weeks long etc...) won't help you if you are in LA.... "So Cal" is pretty large...

I have taken a number of classes from Greg Block, http://www.firearmstraining.com/class_desc.html

They were very good and he has pistols (S&W wheel guns, I believe) for students if they need them. I am taking his Advanced Handgun class later this month. The classes are at Burro Canyon.

You will find his recent postings are primarily on www.calccw.com, as CCWInstructor.

Tactical Handgun with Bruce Krell at www.shooters-edge.com

The course is reasonably priced, will push you to your limits, and teach you how to shoot like no other up at Angeles Range.

                  These guys: http://www.internationaltactical.com/index.asp

It's run by a guy who is LAPD SWAT. They have a 3 day defensive handgun course coming up next month, I'm swamped that weekend otherwise I'd be all over it. And....you don't have to take everyday of training. If you can only make day 1 and 2, then that's all you're paying for.

LMS Defense is another great company. I'm not sure if they have any SoCal classes coming up though.

Walk before you start to run

New shooter no experience shouldn't even be thinking room clearing for quite some time.

For a great basic handgun class go to the Firing Line in Burbank take their Saturday class. They have lots of different guns to choose from. Rentals are included in the cost of the class you just have to buy ammo from them.

                    Then practice what you've learned.

Then proceed to a more advanced set of classes.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I've taken some classes from Top Gun in the past. I'm not sure on what firearms they have available to borrow & you would have to buy their ammo (seems fair since it's their firearms). They now hold their classes at the West End Gun Club.

I agree with Randy about room clearing. Too soon for a newbie to think about. Got to get the basic down first.

I agree with you guys about room clearing. What I meant was a class that would include some "sample" of exciting stuff that is to come with more advance training. Not necessarily room clearing, but more than just stance, grip, legal transportation of gun, etc. something that will continue to keep him interested in pistol shooting.

Thanks for all the replies. But it seems like Firearms Training with Greg is a popular course for beginners. Can someone recommend the top three they would go to?

I searched around and found the following list, but which is the top three for beginners with basic instruction and a little "tactical" thrown in??
