    AR type weapon what caliber

I'm looking to get into an AR type weapon and was wondering (since I know absolutely nothing about them) what caliber is most popular/effective? It would be more of a defensive weapon than a hunting weapon.

    thx

.223/5.56 seems to be the most common.

.223/5.56 would be effective and readily available. But a 9mm AR-pistol would be better suited for home defense
