Just got back from the range, my gathering law bought a Springfield G.I.1911 that he is having problems with. If the slide is looked in the open position and you insert a magazine then hit the slide release the round will not chamber. It moves up the ramp a little but thyself it. Any ideas?

First, don't use your slide lock like that. It's a lock, not a release. Pull the slide back and let it go. Second, it's probably the reloads. GI's are very very picky. Try factory rounds and see what happens.Comment

do you have a caliper? Check the OAL length on the ammo, that might be a problem. Also what kind of ammo did you guys buy, ball or semi wad cutters?Comment

Try using some 230-grain FMJ factory ammo, and perhaps a different magazine.
My Springfield 1911 reliably feeds Federal American Eagle and Winchester USA ammo, using the Metalform magazine that came with the gun. It also functions well with magazines from Checkmate, Chip McCormick, or Tripp Research.
I would try Federal American Eagle 230-grain FMJ ammo, and a Tripp Research Cobra Mag. If your 1911 doesn't function correctly with that combination, the problem is likely with the pistol itself.Comment

The GI and Milspec can e very picky. If you throat and polish the chamber you probably won't run into this problem again.Comment

best thing about gi and milspec 1911s, they get better the more you shoot. i use that excuse all the time.
try different mags also, if it still does it with a wilson etc... then you know it's not a mag problem(\__/)
