Instead of using snap caps in my Ruger Vaquero and .454 Casull, would it be safe to use a piece of rubber say 1/16" thick inserted in the channel where the hammer falls to the firing pin? Seems like it would work as long as the rubber does not interfere with the cocking and firing. Thanx in advance

Seems like it would work to me, but it may be tough to get it to stay. Really for me I use snap caps to practice jams and other types of scenarios more so than dry firing. I don't think dry firing without snap caps hurts a gun as much as people would have you believe. To me it's more of an issue of the energy from the slide slamming into the battery without a snap cap to absorb some of that energy. Of course with the revolvers that stuff won't matter. If you try it let us know how it works.

Pretty much anywhere you can find shooting supplies, you can find snap caps. I happened to buy some at Targetmasters in Milpitas. Also I've seen them at Reeds in Santa Clara, and US Firearms in Sunnyvale.

Drill out the primer in your spent shells, then insert the rubber eraser tip of a #2 pencil. Homemade snap cap. Endless supply too......

The rubber in a eraser isn't as firm as the rubber in a snap cap. Not saying it won't work, but something to keep in mind.

both of the gun shops in vacaville sell snap caps. 19 bucks for 6 in 45 colt. they havem4 .22 cal & up.

Are you looking for dummy rounds or snap caps?

Dummy rounds can be used for anything but they will not slow down your firing pin. Modern firearms that are not rimfire do not need to slow down the firing pin.

Snap caps will slow down the firing pin.

i just cut a piece of reinforced rubber about 1/16" thick to cover just the firing pin, and it seems to work fine. cut it just wide enough to press fit in the channel that the hammer falls in. cut it too long and it prevents the cylinder from cycling correctly. haven't tried it in the ruger yet but works fine in the casull.

I love it when people complain about the price of snap caps. Midway is selling a couple of brands - $15 bucks for 5 (9mm)
$20 bucks for 454 Casull

Now if I get 200 strikes on each of them, that's 1000 shots for 15 bucks. If 15 bucks seems steep to you, you haven't priced ammo lately.

Spent cases may not feed from the magazine well and you don't want to put a spent casing in the chamber and drop the slide damaging the extractor.

Confusing a live cartridge for a spent one is a mistake you don't want to have happen even once.
In the case of Azoom and a revolver, with the cylinder open you get to see the name staring at you with the rubber primer area.
The color is different.

Yeah the prices aren't really that bad considering how much use you get from them. Also, I've seen them a tad cheaper in stores but less of a selection. Check out gun shows too. I really like those snap caps because they act as dry firing protectants and dummy rounds. I've practiced all types of malfunctions and reloads with them. Practicing without any ammo is kind of practicing basketball without the ball. Sure some things can be worked on but the ammo is key. I've learned things like what the absolute slowest I can rack my slide while still having a positive ejection, which mags are giving me feed problems. All sorts of stuff. They're really worth the price.

Oh and if you find the plastic ones, stay away. They'll shatter quite easily if you get a double feed or some type of violent bullet feed.

I don't see why you would have a problem with dry fire on either of your guns. No need for snap caps?
