High cap at range this weekend

I noticed a guy using high cap mags this weekend. At first I wasn't sure but I was standing behind him at the range checking his grouping and noticed that he seemed to be shooting more than 10 rounds at a time. So I decided to count the shots on his next mag and sure enough it was 15. Is this legal or does he have some sort of exemption???

Not sure how this effects your shooting but ask him next time. He will say MYOB.

no law against owning or using a normal handgun magazine. Only restriction is a regular person cant get a new one since 2001.

all information regarding magazines is in the magazine sticky.

it is perfectly possible and likely that his high-caps are legally owned.

The burden of proof is on the state to indicate that said individual broke the law. It is not illegal to possess "standard" capacity magazines before the year 2000. The statute of limitations on the construction a standard capacity magazine is 3 years. I do not advocate breaking the law.

Remember, it is not illegal to own 11+ round magazines. Only to buy, sell, transfer, or import them. He may have acquired them before the ban. Thus he acquired them when it was legal to do so. And thus it would be legal for him to continue to own them.

Its legal so long as he got them before 2000. Its even legal if he came across it one day while taking out the trash. No law against finding one and "adopting" it. So long as he's using it in a handgun that accepts the mag in the pistol and does not have a threaded barrel or shroud or using it in a featureless rifle.

                Really !!!!!

This guy might not of phrased his question to your liking, but a MYOB and none of your business is not a way to treat your fellow members.

To the OP. He may ar may not have been acting illegally. You see a COP on the phone while driving his squad car, he may or may not be doing so legally.

California firearm laws are a spiderweb of complicities. You came to the right place to find your answer. Im sorry that some of the members here were a little harsh to you. This sort of question comes up from time to time and might be wearing thin on some. I hope you find all your answers you are looking for and feel free to post another one in the future. I hope in the future the members will remember to mind their manners.

+1 bombmaster. The OP was simply asking a question. He is obviously ignorant on the subject and needs to be educated not flamed. Isn't that one of the points of CGN, converting more shooters to our side of the ongoing battle in CA through education?

rcserg, ignore everyone telling you to myob. Stay curious. Keep asking questions. Stay thirsty to know more about our insane laws. Once you have acquired knowledge, pass it on to the next new shooter.

Do you mean barrel length of a pistol?
I was unaware it was an issue.
These laws make my head hurt trying to learn them.

????? Where did you hear this? I am very curious since I know this portion in italics to not be true.
