I have a buddy that bought a 45cal 1911 colt back in the 70's at a gun show. He told me that back in those days registration wasnt necessary. Can he still own this? Or sell it?

I'm sure you'll have a number of replies here shortly, but the quick answer is:
Yes. Yes he's fine - pre 1992 you didn't need to do paperwork or go through an FFL for a private sale (assuming that's what this was).
Keep it, sell it again (going through an FFL) it's all cool./Chris

Now, keep in mind,,,,, this is what i was told by DOJ,,,,,although yes, its perfectly legal to own this non registered handgun, if you are pulled over by law enforcement, and your gun is checked, and its not registered to you, and you cannot prove right then and there that its yours, then it will be taken away, and the only way to get it back is to prove ownership, ie: reciept of purchase, bill of sale.Comment

Not true as there would be no way to prove that and the state can't just go around taking peoples property and making them prove that they own it. I have had a pre 91 revolver taken by the police(long story involving a friend who was a little shady) and promptly got it back without any proof of ownership other than the fact that it was in my possession when they took it.if you are pulled over by law enforcement, and your gun is checked, and its not registered to you, and you cannot prove right then and there that its yours, then it will be taken away, and the only way to get it back is to prove ownership, ie: reciept of purchase, bill of saleIn any type of fight, & especially gun fights, there are no winners ..... just varying degrees of losers. The only fight you win is the one you never get into.

Of course to sell it to you now it will have to go through an FFL and will be forever registered with the government.
It's nice to have guns that were bought before those laws went into effect.Frank
