Rock Island Armory 1911s with chrome?

I've seen the Rock Islands Armory 1911s advertised for a very affordable price ($350-399) for a while now. One company (Century I think) is offering a modified version; they chromed the slide. While the bitone looks nice to me, would the chrome actually hold up well to all the sliding/moving/shells kicking out/polishing/cleaning, etc.? Although it appears to be stainless, it's not! Just curious.

I would very much like to acquire a 1911; hopefully in the not too distant future. I drool like a great dane over all the ones many of you post pics of here. Just not sure which way to go; cheap to save some cash or spendy to have no worries and hopefully take care of any desire to acquire another one.

Please chime in and let me know what you all think about the chromed slides on the RIAs. Thanks.

The company I think is Classic Arms that is doing the hard chrome. Hard chrome holds up well but they chrome the front sight too it looks like which would make it really hard to see. http://www.classicarms.us/ Mark

      Railroader,

Do you have one? If so, how do you like it?

I saw a brand new Tactical at the range today. The owner shot about 100 rounds through it - it performed perfectly. I got to shoot a clip and the trigger felt very nice. I am amazed at how polar the opinions about this pistol tend to be.

Riverjack, I don't have a Rock Island but I use to have an Armscor(same company) that had the beavertail grip safety and novak style sights. The gun was a little rough looking inside but it shot good. I wound up swapping the internals with some used kimber parts I got off of ebay because they were a little nicer. My stepson still has the gun, still runs fine. Mark

            Railroader,

Thanks for the reply. As you can tell, I'm considering purchasing one. Just not sure if I should or not.

um, would it still be ok to buy since it now has a different finish than that of which is approved on the certified list?

I would think so. Guns are listed by make and model, not finishes. I could be wrong though.

$379 plus shipping for a RIA Tactical. But on the DOJ roster the tactical isn't listed as Rock Island I think it's just Armscor even though the two guns are probably identical except for the marking on the slide. Mark

Unfortunately centerfire systems will not sell handguns to California. I had a long discussion with them and provided them with a link to doj to show that the hand gun was approved for Cali. They would not sell or ship to my ffl. I went as far as to have my ffl call and set up an account with them and they still wouldnt do it. I bought my tactical from Sarco and had it shipped to my ffl.

                          Hope that helps
