    Springfield XD 40 Tactical

I gave it some thoughts and I would love to get 1911, but I think my best bet is to get a all around gun like XD's

1911 are just too expensive and XD's 40SW is readily availiable through my retailer.

any thoughts before i make purchase XD? good and bads?

I got the XD 45 service and couldn't be happier (I guess an HK would make me happier) Didn't like the way the 40 kicked when I shot it

Well if you don't want to dive into a 1911, the XD will be a fine choice. I'd get a trigger job from Springer Precision for it and maybe better sights. The trigger job will make it feel like a 1911.

i did shoot a 9mm xd, i didn't like the recoil and trigger, too much pull and too much recoil. Over all i liked a gun. its a solid gun.
that's why i want to go with 5" tactical for recoil, and probably get a trigger job as well...

If you didn't like the recoil on the 9mm, your gonna hate the recoil on the 40 S&W.

A function of more felt recoil is the high bore axis on XDs. The tactical length doesn't fix that. Have you tried a Glock, M&P, or CZ75 SP-01?

H&Ks are nice guns, I don't think I will ever own one, though.

i really like how xd fits my hands and its for my lady too.

so what would be a idea caliber for home defense with less recoil?

Longer sight radius = better precision. There will be less recoil due to more weight but that's minor because the main weight, the slide is the part that is moving. If the bore of the gun was in better line with your hand, less torque will be imparted by the recoil. The guns I recommend have this feature. 1911s do as well. That's why you're told to have a high grip when you shoot pistols.

I just recently picked up an XD-45 Service and I love it. It didn't have all the bells and whistles as some of the previous pistols I've owned, but It's fit me the best and it has certainly been the most accurate.
Added a little grip tape and my only wish is that I'd picked one up sooner.

hows the recoil difference between 45 and 40? i shot 1911 45 and it felt like it had less recoil than xd's 9mm

Again, its personal feel and the low bore axis of the 1911 as compared with the higher bore axis of the XD. You have to compare apples to apples. A .45 is a heavy push, the 40 a hard snap, and the 9mm a lighter snap. But you have to compare all these calibers in the same gun.
