    Which 1911

Looking to buy my first 1911. I don't want to spend over $1000 besides the Rock Island what else would you suggest. I have taken a gun smithing class I want to make this a hobby and do some work myself.

Same boat as you...Me and a buddy are going to go to the gun show in Irvine at the end of the month. We are looking to go COLT as that is the original and what better way to celebrate it by buying one. I saw one at Turners for $1100...That is close to your budget.

Other brands that I am looking at are S&W and Kimber. My budget is $1300...The M9A1 is waiting again...

You could go with a SA GI or you could find some Kimber TLE's for under a grand

If you want to practice some gunsmithing, get the Rock Island GI model.
Not that it won't work, but the cheapest most basic gun. Then change the bushing, do a trigger job, fit the slide, etc.

If you want to practice gun smithing on it the SA GI is usually the default go to 1911 as it is cheap and decently built from the factory.

A Springfield Loaded would fit your budget with a little money to spare.

Bass Pro Shops has the S&W Stainless no rail 1911 on sale right now to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the 1911 for $749. It's regularly $900. I went there unknowingly with the intention to pick up this weapon and to my surprise, the price was even lower. S&W 1911's are one of the most underrated 1911's out there, yet they seem to be one of the most reliable 1911's out there thanks to the external extractor that some purist don't like. For under $1200 my first choice is a S&W, followed by a SA Loaded then a RIA. For $1200-$2000 my choice would be a Les Baer TRS, PremierII followed by SA TRP no rail, TRP Operator half rail, Dan Wesson PM7, SA TRP Operator full rail. The slide/frame fit on this S&W is super tight with no movement. What a quality gun for the price.

You could always just buy the frame and slide and fit all the parts yourself and make it truly a custom. If you have never fit a slide to frame, I wouldn't recommend it just yet. It's a lot of fun.

For sure not new from a dealer, can't buy one mail-order. A PPT? But how would you do the 'Safety Demonstration' for the dealer with the dummy rounds?

Better off just buy a whole gun, it's really not that hard, there aren't any bad choices, just different paths...

                            Me, I'm a purist...
