    New dirty RIA 1911

Last week I brought home my new RIA 1911 after I field stripped it I noticed that the barrel was extreamly dirty. I know they fire some rounds out of it at the factory but it looked liked 100 rounds had been shout out of it. I had to run a bore brush several times to clean out all the muck. Has anyone else noticed this on a new RIA 1911? Anyways cleaned her up and she is now GTG.

I wonder if maybe the gun shop let someone try it out? Next time I will look down the barrel and not take the stores word that the gun is new.

Maybe it's just a little dirty? ... they probably sprayed some cleaner or oil on it including the bore before they got it ready for sale so some dirt/dust could have stuck...

It did take around 10 cleaning patches to clean her up. The first 5 were solid black.

Both the Rocks I've bought brand new were dirty and drowned in cosmoline. Its cool, a quick cleaning, then I go and dirty it right back up again.

That is kind of that standard of how RIA's come... Mine was the same dirty and covered in oil in a bag with cosmoline.

Same here, tho I only own one. They drown it in cosmoline so the Phillipine climate doesn't turn it into a pile of iron oxide before it leaves the factory.

FWIW a good cleaning/oiling is standard procedure for any new gun. The oil/cosmoline manufacturers use for shipping is a preservative, not a lubricant.

Any time I hear of brand new guns failing to cycle I wonder if they've been cleaned & oiled first.

Kerosene is the classic solvent to remove cosmoline. Laquer thinner or mineral spirits will get it done as well.

Just make sure you re-oil, those solvents get all the oil off and the bare steel will rust without something on it.

WD 40 is a fine product but it is not for firearms.

How come the product says: Its good for firearms, apply generously if planning to store for long time. However, I am sure petrol products tends to leave a "gummy" residue in the long run.
