It's up to the individual range.
Unless you are renting a handgun, you are dealing 100% with range policy and not California law.

If you are renting, the only legal issue is the range cannot provide you with a gun if you are a prohibited person.

Most ranges want a "government issued photo ID"... key word photo... but you may get lucky.

And a DL does not cease to be a "government issued photo ID" the morning it expires.

it ceases to be a valid government issueed photo ID. which is where the problem lies.

Ceases to be a valid permit to operate a motor vehicle.

But it remains a Government-issued ID, and you remain the same person you were when it was issued, and you certainly didn't suddenly become 30 years younger, therefore, nothing has changed other than the date on the calendar.

For gun purchases and other official usage? Of course... the government won't accept it and the gun shop can't accept it.

              For entry to a range?
That is 100% store policy. There is no law that says that ID is required, therefore there is no law that says the range can't accept an expired ID.

That's why I was careful in my word choice, saying "most ranges want". We're in agreement, it's the rangemaster's discretion whether it flies or flops.

The OP just needs to call before going, and note down the person's name, so you can reference to them if there is a disagreement between the workers.

Mine arrived right around the 4 month mark. Cool bear punch-hole watermark!

TSA will accept an expired drivers license, so it is apparently still valid identification to the US Gov. even upon expiration.

(I kept handing them the Interim paper with the expired card and they never wanted to look at or even touch the paper...)
