Special order gun and the 10 day wait?

If I buy a special order gun thats not displayed in the gun store is it possible by law to start the 10 day wait then so I don't have to come back until its ready to pickup?

And if you got the serial numbers before the gun arived (no falsifying) would they then be able to start the DROS earlier? Hmmm?

Yes, it can be done.
However, the dealer must really trust his supplier to give him the correct serial number, model number etc.

I ordered a S&W 1911 under these circumstances. The supplier took a couple of days to get the serial number to the shop (hint, weekends can throw a delay in this circumstance), and once the shop got the number they called me up and we did the DROS started before the gun arrived. This cut about 5 days in the process.

But, and it's a very LARGE but, the shop has to REALLY trust he's getting the gun that matches the serial number provided to him.

You may encounter a shop not willing to take that risk.

So technically, I had to go back to the shop to START the DROS. If they had the serial number at that instance when I put down 1/2 payment, the DROS could have been started then.
I also went back before the 10 day period expired to visit the gun while it was still in jail.

The shop is not to far from my house, the folks are nice so it was not a chore to go in. If the shop were far away, I would have had a slightly different take on the situation.

I've sent via email customers serial numbers to the dealer and customer so they can start the 10 day wait while the gun is in transit. Your miles may vary.
