When loading the round that is in the chamber, are you loading it from the magazine, and then topping the magazine off? Or, dropping a round into the chamber, releasing the slide, and inserting a full mag? I have heard of some guns not being able to be loaded this way.-madmike.
I would like to say something profound here...Comment

You need to download a round in the magazine and your problem will go away.Comment

Perhaps you can borrow someone elses old old Glock 19 mag and see if the issue goes away also.. Dont' force load 10+1.... Just load 10 rack the slide and be good with 9 remaining in the magazine..
I bet someone you know will let you try out an old used mag.. OR just go to a range that rents a Glock 19... That should be an easy thing to find..Last edited by Ranger20; 02-25-2011, 9:34 AM.Join Date: Oct 2008

Don't +1 the gun and see what happens, report back Rob. 95% sure it's the mag springs and they will work in with time or some sanding as posted above. The easist way to figure it out is to simply not top off.Larry Renner

My 19 did the same almost, for the first 2 days at front site, all I did was put a bit more oil on it and day 3 and 4 had no failures

it's the 10 round magazine. i had the same problem with my G19 when it was new. switched to my pre-ban high caps and it went away. those 10 round mags are junk and unreliable!˙ǝuılƃıs ʎɯ uı ʇnd oʇ ɹǝʌǝlɔ ƃuıɥʇʎuɐ ɟo ʞuıɥʇ ʇ,uɐɔ I

I have mostly FTFs (next round goes a bit sideway to the right of the feeding ramp and gets stuck) after first shot when having full magazine + one in the chamber. Also, I'd get FTEs (casing stays completely seated no stove piping) with the same setup, but that's much rarer. It seems mag independent and happens with both old and new mags. The rest of the magazine seems to go without a problem. The ammo I use is Federal from Walmart. Any ideas?
I've both had and seen this happen with a wide variety of firearms.
Just to try and diagnose the problem do the following.
1. Do not top of the magazine, instead load it 3 rounds short of full. Again, this is just to see if it solves the problem. If it does, then try it 2 rounds short and see if that still solves the problem or if the issue continues. If it solves the problem try it with only 1 round short. I am guessing you will need to be at least 2-3 rounds short. This is because the spring tension with all those rounds is causing the magazine to seat just enough not to fall out but not enough to properly feed the firearm. This is EXTREMELY hard for people to accept at first. I refused to accept this concept for years. Every 500+ magazine changes I would have some malfunction and refused to believe this was why because I just did not want to sacrafice those rounds in the mag. Eventually I gave into peer pressure and download by 3. Have not had a single malfunction since...and it has been several years now. Can't promise those kind of results. But it gives you some idea of how effective this one little step can be.
Even if this does not immediately solve the problem keep doing it with #2.
2. Buy several different brands/makes of ammo. All factory new. No reloads. No seconds. Every once in a while a gun decides it does not like a certain brand/make of ammo. Guns can be picky that way. Perhaps your gun just doesn't like the federal ammo. So use trial and error to find the brand/make it likes the best.
That should solve your problem. If after downloading by 3 you have this problem with a bunch of different brands of ammo...there is a mechanical issue and you need a Certified Glock Gunsmith to fix it.
JUST A FEW NOTES:
Downloading the magazine is something you should always do with semi-autos. Topping off the magazine is just begging to have a failure to fire. Thank goodness for preban hicaps. Those without them, well your 10 round magazine is really a 7 round magazine. Sorry! If you are just plinking and bench resting it is not as much of an issue for you. Because you can take all day to change your magazines and confirm they are properly seated. It is when you are using your weapon for competition or for self defense (and training realistically) that you really begin to notice this. Those high speed tactical and emergency reloads will not seat properly 100% of the time if you are fully topped off.
As for a gun being picky about ammo, this can happen with any make or model firearm. If you haven't seen it happen with your favorite brand, just give it a little more time. I've seen it happen with most major brands. Those I have not witnessed personally, a reliable source has. I've also seen guns function flawlessly with a certain brand for years then suddenly not like it. Because something in that ammo changed just enough to monkey things up. No brand or make is immune.Last edited by tacticalcity; 02-25-2011, 12:50 PM.Comment

That is how to wreck the extractor. Allways load from a magazine.Comment

I agree. Mines brand new, 250 rounds thru it and hasn't had any mag problems. It is more likely the mag from the way the op is describing it though. In any case, the only time I've had an issue is when my friend press checked it and didn't realize you have to let the slide snap forward into battery all the way. He went to fire and it didn't and had to explain to him

If it happens the same way every time, stop going 1+ full mag. There's too much tension from the full mag to allow the round to feed properly after the first shot. I suppose you could try a heavier mainspring. I personally would opt for not topping of the magazine. Is that one extra round really that important?NRA Benefactor Life Member

As already suggested leave your mags loaded up when you store them. The springs will take a "set" then loading will be easier and the pistol should be more reliable. Borrowing other mags to try in your pistol with your ammo is also a good suggestion. My brand new G19 is 100% with the ten rounders. I run the ten round mags topped off all the time in IDPA/USPSA matches and they work well when broken in.
