    XD 9 slide question

Today I took my sprinfield armory XD 9mm to the range. Its only the second time I have shot it. About half of the time though when I finished the magazine the slide wouldnt stay open.

    Is this normal ?

Not normal. Do you have big paws? It is possible you were hitting the slide release?

No it is not normal. Did you clean and lub the pistol before you used it? My xd9 and xd40 never had a breakin period.

I wouldn't think your situation is normal at all.
I have maybe 300rds through my XD sub .40 Not one glitch, no lube, no cleaning, right out of the box.
It's clean now and at Springer Precision for some mods.

Well it sounds like either your magazine is dirty, the magazine spring is worn out and doesn't have enough pressure to push up on the slide stop, or you are using some seriously wimpy rounds. See if the magazine will lock the slide back when it is empty.

The gun and the magazines are brand new. This is only the second time I have shot them.

I guess I can try some different ammo next time. If its not the ammo what could it be ? Should I send to back to SA to have them look at it ?

Mine did this all the time with my XD-9..It was my thumb that kept hitting it enough to make the slide release button engage. I had someone watch closley.

Is yours a subcompact? I notice the way I must hold the gun/grip it hits the slide release so it doesnt stay open. Its been doing it since I got it. Its me, not the gun. I have shot all sorts of good ammo, and all new mags too.

Dont let everyone scare you since everyone on calguns like to instantly say your gun is messed up befor they even know whats happening.

Try re-adjusting your grip. I did and mine stopped doing this. Acually a more common problem then people in this thread are stating.

keey your thumb or grip off of the slide stop when your shooting. with an empty mag just pull the slide open, it should lock into place.

The lever that you push to either lock the slide back or release the slide into battery

This is extremly common among people when they first start shooting XDs

Keep an eye on your thumb on the slide stop. Thats more then likley what the problem is.

It's almost a no brainer that you've got you thumb on the slide stop. It's easy to do. When I switch from a 1911 where I am riding the thumb safety and get onto the XD, many times my thumb ends up on the slide lock preventing it from being pushed into place by the empty magazine.
