Break in is easy, take it to the range and shoot for as long as you have ammo. Repeat each week until it's worn out or you die, whichever comes first.

I have a 317 and a 617, and like them both. I'm not sure the 317 is up to high-volume fire - the front end of the ejector rod keeps unscrewing and then the cylinder won't release, and the nub-button at the rear of the cylinder scores the alloy frame. The ejector rod is easy to re-tighten and I need to thread-lock it, but I worry that the frame might loosen after thousands of cycles.

sort of thought that was the type of response i'd get: just fire it. i plan to do so when i pick it up.....waste not, want not.

thanks for the feedback re the 317/617's.

Having seen a few well-used 317s show up over the last few months, I asked over at S&Wforum about the effects of the groove in the recoil shield, and everybody agreed it didn't affect operation, but also agreed that the 317 wasn't the best bet for putting tens of thousands of rounds through...

        I wish they'd make a nice J or K frame steel .22 for a reasonable price again.
